i get something like 5-10 messages a week on linkedin. Either headhunters or people trying to strike up business relationships. It's annoying.

The CPC is aware of your sinophobia and have arranged a meeting under the guise of a job interview to whisk you away for reeducation.

Our company got acquired by another larger company. Nobody is getting laid off, which is good, but my position is being absorbed into their equivalent which is a huge step down in title and likely in pay.

Get to startup the CV/Cover Letter shuffle again until I get out. Always love this part of life...

people are definitely going to be laid off. Hope for a severance package in 3 months when the redundancy is fully realized.

I think it was written into the merger deal that they were not allowed to lay people off. Though I have no idea how that doesn't just stop them from laying people off when the deal is fully done (legally) in a few months. Once we are a cohesive company can they then just lay people off without repercussion? I can't see why not.
Won't be much of an issue I expect because we used to be the 'startup culture' and now we are under the umbrella of Acme Conglomerate Holdings Corp and people are leaving in droves.

'startup culture' is so fucking stupid. Not an indictment of you personally or even your company. I find it's used a lot to try to extract maximum value out of employees at minimal cost. We can't pay you market rate, but you are affecting change and we are changing the world! Also, we have a ping pong table. Now please work for 14 hours a day to meet the deadline. There will be a masseuse going around to work out that carpal tunnel.

This.

Apart from that company culture is important, apart from some small teams I've yet to experience a good one.

I don't disagree but when I worked government/higher ed my whole life and got a job where they had a fully stocked kitchen, a yearly bonus (dependent on a sales quota which has always been met), and stock, I was happy as a clam.

The food is to keep you in the office so you can arrive early, not take lunch and leave late.
The quota is something they can write into your salary and pray the company misses it by a few $.
And the stock is so they can pay you less but lure you with a glorified gamble.

But it's a heck of a lot more exciting (and stressful) to work a job that can offer things like 'changing the world' than it is to send a request for one computer mouse up the chain of red tape and hear back 6 weeks later that it wasn't approved.

I do believe some companies offered the 'startup culture' and it worked in their, and the employees, favor while many others just offered it as BS so they could, as you mentioned, overwork the employees and pay them pennies.

I work for a large, multi-generational family owned company that is one of the largest in it's field and pays above average wages and has impeccable benefits. Going nowhere.

The only thing worse than start-up culture is sell-off culture.

"Yeah, we'd like to sell the start-up to a private equity firm before the market figures out our product is worthless, so we're going to fire 10 people and dump their work on you so it looks like we're super-productive, so yeah, thanks."

Going nowhere.
Endless growth does have a cost, disruption, 10% growth for your company probably means 9.5% contraction for someone else.
1-2% Annual growth for a mature company is still seen as a disaster though.

Are they having layoffs at the tranny factory you work at? You could always get into business with newbie and work at his tranny workshop.

No, furlough maybe until business gets picked back up, layoffs no. They are trying to get into the face shield business which could remove the need.

I am watching a show written by Stephen King about a retired detective who is bored and depressed and comes out of retirement for blah blah blah. Depressed retirees are a Boomer phenomena. Retirement depression will be a thing unique to that generation.

Now that we have video games, legalized marijuana, Netflix, ebooks, internet pornography, social media, and whatever else I am forgetting, there is no excuse to experience retirement boredom or depression. Entertainment options are endless. You will always have less time than you will have fun things to do during that time.

What is the point I am trying to make? The central premise of the show, a retired detective going back to work, is dated and alien. I think it says a lot about Stephen King's 72 year old mindset to write 3 books based off of this premise. And I just hope you guys keep that in mind the next time you see a show or movie about a depressed retiree. It's probably written by an old person as alien to you as Billie Eilish.

We have secured doors to various parts of the building. The door access controls are in our server room, which is also controlled. I have full access to everywhere, including the server room even though I am not MIS or support.

The server room's electronic lock is also an easy way to provision new key cards. To do this, you have to scan the new key card at the access point of the server room. The access point goes in to a kind of stand-by mode as it waits for you to scan a new card into the provisioning system. During this time, you can't use the access point to get in to the server room.

I shut the server room door on accident before I could finish provisioning the new card. It wouldn't let me back in because it was still waiting for me to accept the new key card into our access control database. MIS couldn't remote in to the door control server because it is on a different subnet.

You can also access the door by way of traditional lock and key. I had to call in one of the HR managers (quarantine, working from home) to find the key. She dropped 3 lockboxes full of untagged keys on my desk. I spent an hour this morning trying about 100 different keys before I found the correct one.
