We had a choice early on in the UK’s trajectory to go down the South Korean path of mass testing, isolating carriers of the virus (50% of whom are asymptomatic), tracing all contacts to ensure they isolate as well, and at the same time taking soft measures to delay the spread. Instead, we watched and waited, and whether it was academic navel-gazing, political infighting, a sense of British exceptionalism, or a deliberate choice to minimise economic disruption over saving lives, we have ended up in a position where we are now closer to the Italy scenario than anticipated, and are faced with taking more and more drastic measures.

i agree with this, but i don't agree that blanket banning flights to an entire country at the first sign of an outbreak was the right response.

how did it get from china to italy? italy did ban all flights. it still made it over there.

what about all the international workers, students, relatives? not to say the airlines themselves, who will come knocking for a bailout?

as i've said countless times in this thread, people react with the information they have in that moment. in a rapidly changing scenario such as a pandemic, of course hindsight becomes a very excellent tool. and what? who could have predicted that italy, germany and spain with have 10,000s dead back then? who would have even thought it? italy the worst of all, when it had the most stringent measures in place from the very get-go.

it's not as simple as you want to make it. which goes for almost every discussion here. funny that.

Would have been great to have locked down China at the end of December eh?

Anyway

Funny how you reject the concept of a technocracy right until the moment we need one.

yes banning all flights globally is very techncocratic a solution!
just as the results are in from italy, and the survey says ... lots of people are dying there 'because catholicism'.

keep being a fucking dweeb, dilbs, i'm sure it all makes sense in your head somewhere.

let's ban animal contact worldwide! never mind that the greatest pandemics to ever affect the west came from the humble flea or sewer rat. dilbert has a PLAN you filthy chinese savages!

One of the nurses at the hospital my sisters work at tested positive for COVID-19. The hospital at first thought she may have gotten it from a patient that they suspected of having it but the patient's test came back negative. So the hospital said that since she didn't get the virus at the hospital, they are not going to pay her to self quarantine. She must use her paid time off.

Chloroquine - Various mechanisms
https://www.thelancet.com/action/showPd … %2900806-5

Probably not the fish-tank cleaner grade though.

HOENIX (AP) — A Phoenix-area man has died and his wife was in critical condition after the couple took chloroquine phosphate, an additive used to clean fish tanks that is also found in an anti-malaria medication that’s been touted by President Donald Trump as a treatment for COVID-19.

Banner Health said Monday that the couple in their 60s got sick within half an hour of ingesting the additive. The man couldn’t be resuscitated when he arrived at a hospital, but the woman was able to throw up much of the chemical, Banner said.

“Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure,” the woman told NBC. She said her advice for people would be, “Don’t take anything. Don’t believe anything. Don’t believe anything that the president says and his people ... call your doctor.”

do you spend a lot of time reading the JTA or is it just opportunistically linked by all the white pride protestant groups in australia? very strange way to spend your time.

Christ I just looked at the numbers. We are less than 20,000 cases away from Italy's total number of cases. There are more than 20,000 in NYC alone. Our outbreak is going to be bigger than China's at this rate and more deadly than Italy's if the cases keep going up. Especially if Trump orders everyone back to work this week or next.

that is 100% correct. it's almost as if the epidemiologists' models are working. viral growth is exponential. "this totally blindsided us", says trump, an illiterate.

jay, comment?

Japan just postponed the Olympics. Thinking it over, do we even need the Olympics? I know they were created as a thing to bring the countries together in mutual blah blah blah. In reality it has turned into a pissing match. We should probably not bother with having one ever again.

Now that everyone travels there's hardly a need to send our sporting representatives abroad.

The US is going to be an order of magnitude bigger than China, how did no-one predict this? Sad!

Anyway.

Assuming we get through this do we think that next time a country has even a sniff of a novel infection they aren't going to be locked the fuck down within hours?
Will there be any sanctions for China failing to be open and honest with the WHO and the rest of the international community?

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick suggests he, other seniors willing to die to get economy going again
“Those of us who are 70 plus, we’ll take care of ourselves. But don’t sacrifice the country,” Patrick told Tucker Carlson.

Dan Patrick, Texas’ Republican lieutenant governor, on Monday night suggested that he and other grandparents would be willing to risk their health and even lives in order for the United States to “get back to work” amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Those of us who are 70 plus, we’ll take care of ourselves. But don’t sacrifice the country,” Patrick said on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

Patrick, who said he will turn 70 next week, said that he did not fear COVID-19, but feared that stay-at-home orders and economic upheaval would destroy the American way of life.

“No one reached out to me and said, 'As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that America loves for its children and grandchildren?' And if that is the exchange, I'm all in,” Patrick said.

china were honest with the WHO. the WHO explicitly praised them in the early stages of the viral spread. i have mentioned this about 3 times but you seem obsessed with china getting a comeuppance somehow. how sad that all you want to do is 'get even'.

they refused to let the WHO send representatives/delegates to the area. that's probably because they were clamping it the fuck down in as harsh and authoritarian manner as you'd assume, and didn't want the PR/media attention. but they shared all of their genome sequencing data, published in all the right journals, collaborated on all the science.

put that furrowed tabloid-reading brow to bed for a bit. you're being really tedious.

And what's the death rate? Still think 2.2 million Americans will die?

No, sorry.

Maybe you shouldn't panic about everything.

Maybe the world isn't ending.

Maybe what I originally said, that you can't control everyone and lock everyone down, that the virus would spread regardless of any measures taken, and that quarantines were completely pointless, was correct?

We crashed the economy, for nothing.

Millions of people lost their jobs, for nothing.

Literally everything I've said has turned out to be correct, except maybe for the severity of the illness. I admit I underestimated that a bit.

One thing that has been exposed is that in all of our liberal states, they've been quietly cutting back on services like hospitals and hospital beds for decades because they allowed the pensions of public servants to balloon out of all proportion and had to make cuts. Oops.
