Ford and GM were certainly investing in Germany. iirc Ford was even compensated by the US government for bombing damage to Ford-Werke despite involvement in the V-2 parts manufacture.

Well there you go, today's leaders are more craven than that.
Ford and GM didn't shut down all production in the US and move the lot to Germany.

People like Steve Jobs should have been tarred and feathered, not idolised.

so the chinese girl i was talking about ages ago, my old fling from ye olde London times, popped back up (first time in over a month she has VPN'd in to any western services, e.g. WhatsApp or instagram).

recall her dad is pretty senior in the party apparatus.

seems they are already building their own account of this virus that is very different from ours.

very quick to criticise, too, our own containment strategies and disbelief/ineptitude at dealing with it stringently and effectively (perhaps rightly so).

Humoring that theory for a moment, it would be very strange if the virus were made in a US lab, intentionally planted among the Chinese populace, and then not reacted to when it makes its way back to the US. That would be weirdly self-destructive on the planned level.

Different scenario dynamics, but imagine if the US intentionally baited Imperial Japan into raiding Hawaii, and then proceeded to hand over the continental west coast without a fight.

Reminds me of conversations I've had with some Russians who I no longer talk politics with.

They're mobilising their citizens behind a war. Iraqi WMDs anyone?

Once again, outside Hubei the infection rate is very low, most people have recovered and the death rate is well below 1%.
I'm guessing they have a treatment they're not sharing, possibly a vaccine, aggressive quarantine does not explain such a low mortality compared with places outside China.

it is slightly insane to me how different people's takes on things can be, just because of a different government/media and context. it's like where is the reality principle in all this? chinese scientists turn out RNA analyses saying that the coronavirus in wuhan was 'second generation' and a previous mutation came from elsewhere ...

this isn't all too different from western scientists' take, FYI. the current RNA analysis states that the best match is with a pangolin, but if so it's no pangolin group they've found in china; and if it comes from a bat, their best guess due to the RNA mismatch is that it made a 'middle hop' which is as-yet unknown to us to reach humans. so there you can see the uncertainty that breeds a 'it came from elsewhere' theory.

there were severe flu-type viruses in america and the UK in january/february time. many people were ill with a particularly virulent and severe 'flu season'. due to not intensively testing every case of suspected flu ... again, there's the uncertainty which leads to a possibility ...

in the west you have people like dilbert concluding that it's the 'beastly chinese' and their 'inhuman cuisine and filthy habits'. which is just as pantomime and ridiculous, and unscientific in thinking, as a chinese citizen obediently believing that 'american soldiers' brought it over with them, purposefully or not, when they attended a military meet.

where is the truth? as i said to her, it'll be tit-for-tat and ultimately unproductive talk for years.

Once again, outside Hubei the infection rate is very low, most people have recovered and the death rate is well below 1%.

japan and china have been cooperating on re-tooling a flu-type antiviral which has some efficacy in a majority of mild cases. it does not work on severe or critical cases, though, so if it's doing anything about the death rate it's only due to its intervention between the first 'phases' of infection, e.g. fever, cough, aches and pains, and the 'advanced' phase which becomes interstitial pneumonia and myocarditis (leading to heart failure).

the drug in question is called 'favipiravir' and it's the closest thing anyone has come to an antiviral treatment, in lieu of a vaccine, just yet. japan are keeping pretty shtum about it.

It was the Chinese who themselves concluded it was a specific Wuhan meat-market, and their 'inhuman cuisine and filthy habits', which they shut down.
Presumably this was based on some data, testing etc.

From, you know, wiki
http://weekly.chinacdc.cn/en/article/id … a8db1a8f51
https://www.newsweek.com/china-traces-c … ro-1492327

Are they now saying something different?
Presumably they're backpedalling furiously to avoid the wrath of their own people.

Probably they'll never share any data so no-one will ever get to the truth. Like Chernobyl it may take decades and a change of government to get the full truth.
Fuck them frankly.

People here are pissed, I don't see anyone going to a Chinese restaurant or doing business with Chinese again.

i said the same thing to her, people are angry at china's perceived culpability.

the difference is some criticize the government's ineptitude (or willing corruption) and some, like you, use it as an excuse to go off on 'alien eating habits'. you've expressed the same thing passim about eating insects, even though it's harmless and in fact a better source of protein in every conceivable way (except for your personal disgust) according to your own eco- and health-based 'concerns'. this hypocrisy is where it becomes easy to see that you've got more skin in the 'public concern' game than you like to admit.

agree that the twisting is probably damage control by the Party to placate its people. i just don't agree that dismissing someone's diet or eating habits is constructive, as if that'll fix zoonotic transmission (it hasn't in other places and it won't in perpetuity).

Probably they'll never share any data so no-one will ever get to the truth.
the chinese have been sharing their sequencing data with the virological community from the very start. what are you talking about? the WHO explicitly thanked them for their transparency and cooperation.

even the US thanked them. errrrr.

Well the fact is Chinese people's disgusting eating habits have caused this.
Avoiding eating animals known to harbour serious pathogens is a good way to avoid serious pathogens.

Chinese demand for valueless 'delicacies' have fucked us all up.
Chinese demand for valueless rhino-horn and ivory will likely send elephants and rhino extinct.
Chinese demand to fill their fat faces will likely destroy the Galapagos eco-system.

i've never once denied that chinese medicine is fucked up. you don't have to link me 'green world warriors' sites about rhino horns, tiger's teeth, shark's fins, bear's gall bladders, or any of the rest of it. i categorically agree with you.

but, once again, you can't do much about their eating habits. what're you going to do, force them to change centuries-old cuisine? go to war over the fork versus the chopstick?

the west has plenty of disgusting eating habits. i just don't see the point in this sort of discussion whatsoever. tilting at windmills, headbutting a wall, etc. rage on, bro, rage on!

obviously this is going to be economically ruinous. we are essentially declaring a moratorium on the entire world economy and most forms of trade activity.

but on the other hand it’s like an intercession period for the environment. have emissions in china, or even globally, been this low in the last half a century? how many times in history have we effectively hit pause on modern industrial civilisation?

it’s like all the economic pain symbolises the painful costs of all the green policies and decarbonising that we’re busy not doing.

what i’m trying to say is: we should pause civilisation for 3 months of every year. let the earth breathe. people can pursue their hobbies. men and women can dance. sew daisy necklaces. there can national exhibitions of folk art and expressions of communal belonging. old people will be given mescaline before dying, not heroin. the young will be given LSD when they hit puberty, as a rite of the assumption of adulthood. dilbert can marry a chinese lady.

another world is possible, peoples!

for most of western history, the majority of protein for most westerners (read: the lower orders) was offal. 101 ways with a sheep's eyeball, 10 lifehacks with bull's cock, variations on brains. in most of the balkans today, for e.g. in albania, the 'national dish' is sheep's intestines wrapped around the heart, liver, etc. that's the local delicacy. intestines. those things that squeeze shit.

i don't even need to point to the humble american beefburger or hot dog. unthinkable filth.

anyone who rails on china for 'dirty food' is an idiot.

Virtually every cuisine identified as a regional or national treausure, haute cuisines, exotic, etc. started out as peasant food. That's one of the main points Anthony Bourdain tried to make clear on his global foodie jaunts.

It's common knowledge that many major diseases initially made a jump from animals to humans via close relations of some kind, whether it's eating them, sleeping next to them, sleeping with them, or just generally being in their vicinity as a function of work or environment. It's also common knowledge that populations closer to the interaction of those native species were initially at a greater risk for disease, then as time progressed were better inoculated against future strains and mutations of those diseases. We should be applying the knowledge we've gained over centuries to better address current and potential zoonotic viruses, illness, and disease while also acutely understanding that as we encroach on more and more wilderness, it will lead to further and more frequent interaction with animals, including ones we may not have had close contact with before.

We should also acknowledge that some people will find any reason possible to create hierarchical structures with themselves at the top, and sometimes this nonsense manifests in arguments that other cultures are more savage because the way they do XYZ isn't the same as the way they do.

Shit just got real

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ETZQi6IXQAMbFav?format=png&name=medium

What we should be doing is not encroaching on animal habitats, not giving people a free pass to eat shit they don't need to in the modern age, putting resources into medical problems which need to be solved, not wasting our efforts working on cures for zoonotic diseases which could be completely avoided in the first place.

Misplaced liberalism isn't liberalism at all. Or maybe we should accept that as population increases and resources diminish wars are as inevitable as the tides so we should put all our efforts into more effective weapons and forget medicine etc?

Anecdotally I had a HK CAD designer working for me. He was hard-working, meek and mild right up to the moment I asked him why shark-fin soup was a delicacy. "I'm at the top of the fucking food-chain, if I want shark-fin soup I want fucking shark-fin soup, fuck the sharks and anyone who says I can't". This from a tubby little chinese guy with beer-bottle glasses and leprosy level eczema.
Weird.

Thats great and all, same for culture.

In various pacific islander cultures cannibalism was the in-thing for millenia.
Should we be 'open and tolerant' to other people's cultures in this case?
When someone turns up at the airport with a suitcase bulging with human body parts and dripping blood what do we say? "Oh those New Guineans, so quaint" and wave them through?
Probably we should divert our resources from MS to treating kuru without addressing the root cause, like good multicultural citizens.
