Did you read my post? No. You never do. Waste of my time.

so you think because non-engineers improve interface design, that non-epidemiologists will be the answer to coronavirus?

do you really think the WHO and CDC don't take into account the economic aspect when making their recommendations?

It is weird as one must wait and see how things in the U.S. transpire. With the long incubation period and asymptomatic duration, it feels like the virus is "breaking the rules", but of course, in reality there's no reason one should expect it to give us a fighting chance.

many countries today are reporting their highest single-day death rates, in many cases doubling from the day before (spain, italy, iran).

you can figure out pretty easily how things will transpire in the U.S. almost all countries are or have been on the same trajectory with this.

the ones that are curbing the rate, such as SK, taiwan and china, have enacted far tougher policies than the U.S.

No, they do not.
so, to rephrase larssen earlier, what do you actually propose?

in regards to your 'america only has 2,000 cases talk', this is the difference between a country which only tests the seriously ill and hospitalised and a deep testing approach like SK.

German government sources told Reuters on Sunday that the U.S. administration was looking into how it could gain access to a potential vaccine being developed by a German firm, CureVac.

Earlier, the Welt am Sonntag German newspaper reported that U.S. President Donald Trump had offered funds to lure CureVac to the United States, and the German government was making counter-offers to tempt it to stay.

There was no comment immediately available from the U.S. embassy in Berlin when contacted by Reuters over the report.

“The German government is very interested in ensuring that vaccines and active substances against the new coronavirus are also developed in Germany and Europe,” a Health Ministry spokeswoman said, confirming a quote in the newspaper.

...

Welt am Sonntag also quoted an unidentified German government source as saying Trump was trying to secure the scientists’ work exclusively, and would do anything to get a vaccine for the United States, “but only for the United States.”

Jay I do think you're letting your own political views seriously cloud your judgment on this matter, which is a little ironic as you accuse liberals of being the issue. But that is precisely the point: instead of focusing on the epidemic at hand you're letting your opinion be shaped by democrats who criticise Trump, by democratic news outlets and by political movement in general. Looking solely at the data at hand it's impossible to deny that covid-19 poses a very real, sudden threat. If only through the fact that a country like China felt it was necessary to enforce probably the most draconian quarantine of all on a city and province that fulfilled an important role in its domestic logistical network. Considering the general regard for individual life on the part of the Chinese government, I'm pretty certain they weighed the economic & societal consequences quite well before deciding on that course of action. The initial repression maybe tells us they might've agreed that they could sacrifice some people for the needs of the many, but evidently that situation spiralled out of control very fast.

Let's also be clear that some of the criticism levied against Trump is very relevant and warranted. Apparently his administration disbanded the pandemic unit in the national security architecture which had been founded under Bush and kept in place under Obama. Cuts were also proposed to the CDC, which couldn't pass congress but tells you this was obviously low on the list of priorities. These are just two examples which demonstrably weaken your country's response capacity against this sort of crisis.

But he's in power now and this seems to be the first crisis he has had to deal with which can have very real domestic consequences. So far, he's always focused on laying blame with foreigners, foreign powers, his predecessor and capitulating liberals for all issues the US faces. He's already tried to do the same in this crisis. But ultimately this'll be the real test of his administration's competence in front of the US population as you will directly feel the consequences if he fails.

After 9pm Ohio bars will be closed and restaurants can only offer carryout and delivery, no sit-down. Illinois did a similar order.

For Ohio it looks like people affected by closures or who are quarantined by health officials or employer will get unemployment

New York City officials advised the U.N. diplomatic community on Saturday that the coronavirus has spread widely through the city and could potentially linger as a threat to the health of residents until as late as September, according to four diplomatic sources.

“Everyone in New York should assume that they have been in contact with COVID 19,” city officials told the foreign delegates, according to a read out of a conference call with New York-based diplomats, which was reviewed by Foreign Policy.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ … spitalised

The coronavirus epidemic in the UK will last until next spring and could lead to 7.9 million people being hospitalised, a secret Public Health England (PHE) briefing for senior NHS officials reveals.

Prof Chris Whitty, the government’s chief medical adviser, has previously described that figure as the worst-case scenario and suggested that the real number would turn out to be less than that. However, the briefing makes clear that four in five of the population “are expected” to contract the virus.

The document says that: “As many as 80% of the population are expected to be infected with Covid-19 in the next 12 months, and up to 15% (7.9 million people) may require hospitalisation.”
this is already the biggest public health crisis since the spanish flu pandemic, and on track to pretty easily become the biggest public crisis since world war 2. for 15% of a population to require hospitalisation in the space of 12 months is far beyond any casualty level reported by world war 2 (1-2% of the population) -- and far beyond the current resources and capacity of the hospital system. expect widespread requisitions and diversion of business/industry to public health efforts.

and jay is complaining that public health officials are damaging the economy and democrats are using it to score points against trump.

oh boy are the next 10-12 weeks, as we approach peak infections levels, going to be a wake-up call for Jay's lot.

US cases up 12% in day, with a 2% mortality rate, do the maths on that exponential progression.

Jay is the product of decades of Fox etc claiming that because they have an agenda and manipulate and distort information to further it then everyone else must do as well.

Did you have fun in Iraq, hunting down all those WMDs must have kept you busy. But yeah its only 'Liberals' with an agenda who spread panic and over-reaction.

All the CDC and WHO do is present data and an argued extrapolation. Governments can then use it as they like.
If anything the WHO has been much to slow to call this a pandemic.

Meanwhile Aus and NZ are requiring that everyone who enters the country, not just from hotspots, go into 14 days isolation.
Just think, if they'd one that a month ago we'd have practically no infections.

I'm guessing there's little criticism of China at this point because we're almost wholly dependent on them for so many products.
Hopefully when this is done they'll be forced to stop eating bats and pangolins.

ironically this is the public health official that fox were cheering during the Ebola crisis.

running exponential progressions on ~3,000 confirmed cases is totally pointless, as the US system are only testing people who are severely ill in hospital. they're not even running tests on dead people at this point. they probably have 10x that number of infected which will be up to the 100,000s within a week if you assume the 20-30% rate of growth we've seen in other western countries.

half of all people in the netherlands needing intensive care and respiration are under 50.

it's a very grave situation, no two ways about it.

the main comorbidity in lombardy, where plenty of younger people have died, seems to be obesity.

that'll be a fun fact to chew over in america.

40 to 50 Dutch corona patients in intensive care units: "More than half are under fifty"

Today, between forty and fifty corona patients are in critical condition on Dutch intensive care units. “More than half of those patients are under fifty years old. It also includes young people. "That says chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care (NVIC) Diederik Gommers, in an interview with this site.

The professor of intensive care medicine, who himself heads the IC of the Rotterdam Erasmus MC, emphasizes that it is not only the elderly who are affected by the corona virus. ,, What has mainly made the news is that older people die faster. This is about 2.5 percent of the entire population, while about 15 percent of the elderly die. But more than half of those patients are under fifty years old. It also includes young people. "

The specialist explains that it also regularly happens with regular flu that younger people end up in intensive care. "You can see that with the flu: those people get severe double-sided pneumonia." In addition, older people also choose not to be treated in intensive care.

A 16-year-old boy from Breda is infected with the coronavirus and is currently in the intensive care unit of the Erasmus MC-Sophia Children's Hospital. His family calls on the whole of the Netherlands: "Wake up and take this virus seriously."

The IC specialist also says that admissions to intensive care because of the Covid-19 virus can take weeks. "In Erasmus there are two patients who have been on respiration for three weeks now. All other patients on the intensive care unit are shorter. "

Dutch doctors have also been informed about patients from Lombardy, Italy, who confirm data that young and relatively healthy people are also affected by the corona virus

The youngest intubated Covid-19 patient is a girl of 16 years old. Two children with Covid-19 were admitted to the pediatric IC for observation, but did not require additional therapy, "the information circulated among Dutch physicians states. The first patient to be ventilated in that Italian region was ventilated for eighteen days, while he was relatively healthy. "It was a 38-year-old, otherwise very healthy man, who ran marathons for this."

Main risk factor for obesity

The average age of all covid-19 ic patients in Lombardy, Italy, was 70 years, according to which "the main risk factor for ic uptake is obesity".
National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC showed that 39.6% of US adults age 20 and older were obese as of 2015-2016 (37.9% for men and 41.1% for women).

Half the adult population in the US suffers from high blood pressure.

Around 10% of the US has diabetes.

no wonder jay is in denial.
