I was annoyed awhile back at people who were acting hyper aware of the potential danger of this thing, when their attention spans just let it drop off their radar. Now the same elements are taking it seriously again. Like, welcome back to the party?

Except for the stubborn "it's just the flu" Jays out there I guess. Drifting through this whole ordeal with the unshakable confidence of Steamboat Willie.

What irks me about this crisis is how extremely unstable our 'economic recovery/boom' is. It seems that a month without maximum productivity will instantly topple countless business. Where on earth is the liquidity? Does the private sector have 0 in savings/resilience? It's unbelievable to me that, in my business too, job cuts, removal of all temporary personnel  & work restrictions have already been announced after just one week. Even in the good times the message from above was always 'if we look 2 months ahead we're bankrupt!'. What happened to all those profits...
For a number of businesses, profits get sunk into cost of operation. Not the yacht club. And a number of businesses still haven't completely recovered from the "great recession."
I was referring net profits, not gross. Some industries have done very well in the last 9 years, yet it seems corporate savings were not or barely built up. For companies that have barely turned net profits, yes I understand.

The economic situation returned to growth in most parts of the world from 2013 on. If 6-7 years of healthy market conditions wasn't enough to recover, it stands to reason the economy of the past is no longer the problem.

I guess it makes more sense in terms of companies that have been reporting record profits over the course of several years. You could cynically imagine where that money goes after the celebratory layoffs and probably be close to accurate.

Looking at the data it seem clear China has a vaccine, an effective treatment, or probably both.

Guangdong: 1356 cases, 8 deaths (0.6%) 1299 recovered
Italy: 21157 cases, 1441 deaths (6.8%) 1966 recovered

This the same for every region outside Hubei.

Suspicious no?

Yeeeaaah can you copy and paste the first few paragraphs for those of us without a Times account?
That'd be greeeaaat thanks.

But without reading it, the world should have cut off travel from China and quarantined every international arrival from anywhere months ago, like what NZ is doing now.

reading dilbert go full-retard on conspiracy theory in this thread really is something.

same guy who 3 weeks ago was excoriating china for its 'authoritarian' response is now in disbelief that they've stamped out transmission.

can't possibly be to the credit of their health workers, or the immense sacrifices and efforts they've made.

no, they developed this as a weapon to ruin white civilisation and had a secret vaccine all along!

consuming too many Marvel movies. proof that it rots the adult mind.

it's an article which states that western inaction has been shocking.

much the same as dilbert has been saying.

unfortunately the cognitive dissonance of acknowledging china, or even a south korea or a taiwan, might have had a good idea by going 'full nuclear' on treatment seemingly also leads people to start saying things like 'cucked' and 'china are keeping secrets'.

keep drinking the kool-aid you literal nut.

You have to be impressed with the force and speed with which the Chinese government can mobilise itself & its people in a time of crisis. I detest the information control and repression they engage in (which we can thank for the spread of this disease as well), but their mix of autocratic and technocratic rule is certainly effective if nothing else. Now that it's in Europe it's also China sending masks, medical equipment and other necessities.

Once you've read more than X articles a month you get blocked, small beer.

I don't remember criticising China except for their revolting habits and secrecy, you must be confusing me with someone else, you accused me of being a fascist in fact.

uziq wrote:

it's amazing how much dilbert has come to sound like a fascist ninny. this could be a Hitler-the-vegan quote.

so there should be a blanket ban on all flights into and out of china, is that what you're saying? international students, foreign workers, tourists, etc, shouldn't be repatriated? just to be clear, here. most countries have tried to localise their travel bans to hotspots/clusters of identified transmission, rather than banning an entire country.
Clearly we should have done more to limit travel, you know like we are now.

I'll copy a map in when I get round to it.

We should shut down the world every year for two weeks in order to prevent the flu from spreading.

Confirmation bias, uzi. Right now you can find articles telling you the world is ending. People have lost their fucking minds.

2,700 people have the virus among a population of 329,000,000. 0.0000082067 of the population. We were looking at what? 50,000 deaths, tops? That's how many die every year from the flu in this country. We don't panic, shut down the entire country and go into quarantine. This is the most absurd and irrational thing I've ever been apart of. And I don't know if it's just a function of the pathos of people who vote a certain way, but fuck, left leaning people have lost their entire fucking minds over this shit. Absolutely batshit. Maybe we do need an Obama president, someone to keep these irrational and entirely fragile people from running amock. It is par for the course though  when a conservative feels unsafe he'll go off in the woods by himself. When a liberal feels unsafe he makes the entire world around him change so he can feel safer. I feel hatred for my fellow man right now.

@jay, this was 5 days ago. I think the problem people have is that they can't believe it until it's visualised.

Even China quarantined and has a death rate close to 4% on its confirmed cases.
