Bombshell: 7/10
An interesting story which needed to be told, just not a top-level film.
If I'd thought it were better than Cats I wouldn't have had a problem rating it higher, it being in a different category ie docudrama.
Charlize Theron's accent was a little odd TBH, funny that all foreign actresses were cast in the main roles, did no American want to offend Fox?
I finally understand that it really was policy for the hispanic chick with the improbable legs to be front and centre every day.

Birds of Prey, I don't know out of 10. I haven't seen it but the trials and tribulations of the movie is interesting.

Lowest opening for any DC Extended Universe film. It missed it's open expectation by $20 mil and they changed the damn name to "Harley Quinn : Birds of Prey."

I was unaware that it even existed.

Marketing was awful for this thing. It really came out of nowhere and most people forgot it was even a thing until we saw headlines about how bad it failed.

marketing is never accidentally awful. the studios know when they have a bomb on their hands. it's called cutting your losses.

Birds of Prey seems to be getting alright reviews for a comic book movie. The comic book youtubers seem to hate it, though. Which might speak more in its favor.

Knives Out is still playing locally. I might catch an early screening of that.

I might slot the DVD into a Mystery Science Theater weekend.

JoJo Rabbit - 5/10

I assumed it was the sequel to Peter Rabbit.
How wrong I was.

Addams Family CGI on a lark. Pretty much the first two films remixed into the old comics style. Some stuff from the TV show. Nothing new seen or expected. Defies pinpoint rating. RT's 43% critic and 69% viewer seems fitting.

Midsommar. I liked it but couldn't tell you much of what happened in the middle, beginning and end were pretty great Over 2 hours was a bit much. 7/10

Only cause it's on Prime and the place they visit totally isn't full of cousins in relationships.

Got around to a Joker dvd.

With a bit more thought, it could have probably stood better on its own if it didn't get to lean on an established IP. As it is, it's bleak, exhausting, and relentlessly cynical. Lots of side threads that went nowhere. Mostly unobtrusive soundtrack, some neat camera shots, and Phoenix acting intense.

I also thought it would have done better not attached to the "Batman" franchise as a stand alone movie about a fucked up dude.

If it didn't have the name Joker on it, no one would have watched it. Did you see the movie Her?

To name an example, the love interest side plot that didn't really seem to contribute or conclude.

Maybe less people would have seen it if it wasn't Joker, but it might have had more room to grow.

i did and i thought it was fucking hilarious. There's one scene where he's spinning around with his phone in his hand as if he's holding his IRL girlfriend and it still cracks me up when I think about it.

about 1.20 in

S1m0ne was a bad movie though.

The love interest plot is used to demonstrate that the Joker is an unreliable narrator and that you shouldn't trust everything you witness in the movie. Especially things that paint the Joker in a more sympathetic light.

'Her' has been on my backburner for awhile. I don't really prioritize romcoms.

e: I don't think a movie has to be a blockbuster hit to be a quality film. How long did ID4 run in theaters? Yet there are any number of lesser known movies I'd rather watch.

I get that the movie was from Fleck's perspective (he even dismissed questions about his stance on city unrest), but that doesn't absolve the film of its narrative problems for the audience. It didn't really feel like abstract storytelling to me. Just unfinished.

The acting was cool and all the tribute camera shots were fun to watch. That's where the movie was for me.

Parasite 6/10

Not as good as Cats, really nothing special about it at all. About comparable to 'Get Out' as an odd creepy funny macabre thriller with no special merit.
Probably just a sop to foreign films and an excuse not to give an Oscar to some old white guy.

Korean girls are nice though, I think they're my favourite asians now.

i do find his films a bit underwhelming. like, really?

there are some other asian directors, active today, who are far more worthy. kore-eda's 'shoplifters', which won at cannes last year, is a little masterpiece.

Parasite packages a simple political allegory and a pointed 'moral' lesson so the LA crowd can all applaud hypocritically. they like moralising from atop their shitheap.
