What Rugby Trophies?

The Poms have the world cup.
Tri-Nations is in sitting at the NZRFU in Wellington.
So is the Bledisloe cup.
Super 14 trophy is sitting next to the Super 12 trophy at Jade Stadium.

HOLD ON - MAYBE WE NEED TO BE WORRIED ABOUT OUR TROPHIES.........

Seriously i think we need to be there (yes NZ has troops there too).

Got to agree with 4_Phucsache - it cant be a pleasent job but if we leave the situation alone it can only deteriorate.
I by god we love you NZers, we have been together through thick and thin and I love how we can still hang shit on each other and be friends. Cheers mate.
I know I posted this before, but you know that under the Constitution (not sure which) NZ can join Australia as a state any time it wishes?

It seems that an awful lot of kiwis are questioning whether we are doing enough, soon enough. From what i have seen there is generally good support for the intervention.

BTW i think we currently have 40-50 troops on the ground with a hundred or so more to follow in the next couple of days.

I know the politically correct answer would be to do what we are doing (help them), but if they burn down our attempts to help them, then let 'em figure it out by themselves....

Mcminty.
But the question you have to ask is who's doing the burning?  The capital has issues with gang activity.  Poor areas over here have problems with gang activity.  East Timor is an entire poor *nation*.

And besides, I'll bet the Indonesians are involved somehow.

Thats one statement I would back you 100%. Sorry but I just don't trust them. We can help them and the next day their accusing us of some crap international shit & then the next day they want our help. Make up your mind Indonesia, where do you stand!

Sure, Australia will kick ass down there. Those rebels and rioters are no more tactical than the ones in africa. And those Steyr AUGs. Mmmm

I don't think they'd ever ask for our help, that would be embarassing.  Is anyone else watching that telemovie on ABC?

Uh......no thanks?  They've become a lot less militant, and were quick to respond to the terrorist attack in Bali.  I wasn't aware we were sending them aid though.  How much?

Yes

So if it's a small riot, why are we sending in troops?

Don't really think we need to send in more troops, maybe we should have done what we did the first time. The first time we went in and occupied the whole country in a few days and it stopped all opposition in its tracks. This time we took the first few days making sure the airport was secure not patroling Dili which allowed gangs to loot and kill. Then again the first time we sent in the SAS a week earlier and the opposition just disappeared... strange that.

Basically any population would act the same if law and order broke down... get rid of the police and have the military fighting itself and there will be gangs of looters. Give it a week and everything will be carm, especially as more police arrive.

I've always wondered why the ADF seems to have a fascination with Steyr Aug's...

Yes

I would not call a riot that A. Kills people B. Makes every sensible person flee the capital and C. Make the government ask the help of a nother government whom it kicked out not so long ago - small. We, in essence, CREATED East Timor - I would fucking root for the removal of any government who is in the same position and doesn't help.

As an American we would love to come and help but people would just call us names and accuse of war crimes and torture.  They would think we were there for gold or diamonds or what ever precious resource that is in E. Timor.
There is a bit of oil in East Timor, and I believe a small number of Marines turned up unexpectedly.  I believe they're there to protect the US embassy however, and you need not worry about any oil accusations.  If that had been the case there would be a much larger US presence, and we would of seen US troops there the first time round.  In any case, welcome aboard

I'm sure Australia will be accepted into the New Zealand Empire, albeit begrudgingly.  Be warned though, we will give your bit of land its rightful name - "The West Island"

We've sent an advance platoon of sorts, and a company.  Personally I think we should sent a lot more.

Nobody here trusts them either, not after what happened to Pte.Leonard Manning a few years ago.

Personally I don't really trust Indonesia that much.

We gave them A BILLION AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS after the tsunami - making us the biggest donators - and it was all to Indonesia (well, the billion dollars was)!

And a year and a bit later, they turn around and stab us in the back for letting in - what under our law, anyway - refugees from W. Papua

yup thats what pissed me off!

Now after East timor should we do a turn about and walk straight into W.Papua. I mean if they accusing us of meddling we may as well do some meddling.

loved watching the news tonight, Indonesia had closed their borders & sent their naval fleet to the coastal borders. Believed to be just a sign of posturing! Lmao I say let them mass their forces in one spot just makes em easier targets, 24hours and their entire naval fleet will be sitting on the bottom.
