so the johnson team are finally showing their end-game hand, which is .. unsurprisingly ... to blame everything on europe.

they've been barrelling full tilt towards asking for the 'EU's favour' in requesting an extension, despite making it seem bloody obvious all along that they intend to shift not a bit, thus making an extension a ridiculous joke. now johnson's team are trying to make out that merkel, juncker, macron et al are the intransigent ones who won't brook any differences, whereas, of course, the johnson cabinet/govt have done precisely fuck-all to present a new negotiating offer.

watch the UK right-wing press lap this up and work everyone into a froth about those overbearing frogs on the continent ... frustrating the british will! what a fucking disgrace.

No-deal was always the end-game for Farage.
I doubt there was ever a deal which would have satisfied Parliament and the EU, or the ERG and anyone else.

The country is fucked now, unless there's some no-confidence motion and a rescue plan. Even then I believe the Hungarians are sewn up behind the scenes to reject an extension so they'll veto it and that will be that.

Britain has 10-20 years of economic ruin ahead.

i hope that isn't some conspiratorial Soros-type point. christ.

and yes, there was something in the news cycle today about us going back to 1960's level of national debt.

the fucking irony of the tory party, who have imposed economic austerity on the british people for 10 years, a miserable regime that has ruthlessly cut public services and seen food banks crop up all over the world's fifth-richest nation ... now taking us to levels of debt and economic shit not seen for half a century, all because of their familial psychodrama about europe.

they've lost the vote for a generation now, in any case. young conservatives are about as rare on this island now as meadow pipits.

Depends how long Britain can go on borrowing for.

Maybe the Chinese or Russians will want to buy the place?

russians and saudis/qataris already own vast amounts of london.

and, if my brief time amongst the hong konger 1% was anything to go by, and my tenure in vauxhall tower, the chinese are well on their way to owning the rest of it.

I have heard that before regarding the Republicans and the U.S. There will always be new young people willing to vote conservative because they are upset about cultural issues or think they are better than the poors.

Of all countries in the EU, why would the hungarians care about an article 50 extension.

If anything they want to keep Boris IN the EU. Not out.

As for whatever is going on in the UK they better get rid of Boris quick. I'd be concerned that patience on the part of the French is about gone.

the 'culture war' between the left and right wing doesn't really apply as much here. there aren't the same 'hot button' issues. young people don't get incensed about abortion or gay marriage. on social values there is not a lot of difference between a firebrand socialist like corbyn and a modern conservative like cameron: all basically centre-left cosmopolitanism.

demographically, at least, the right-wing here are in a death spiral with an ageing base who are not being replenished. young educated people see the lib dems or the greens as more palatable than the tory party. they have an image problem and the only reason they've extended their shelf-life at the moment is by pandering to the far-right and appealing to the disaffected, ex-labour left voters in post-industrial areas, basically like trump in virginia or something. that's a short-sighted aim: just look at what has happened to the republican party.

certain aspects of the right-wing commentariat believe that hungary is going to make some sort of nationalistic, right-wing display of allegiance to the increasingly orban-lite english tory party; and, of course, when this isn't forthcoming, they can handily blame it on soros and the international jewish elites who are thwarting 'real democracy' (i.e. populism) in europe.

Your debates around migrants and immigration would be filed under culture war in the United States.

I find your comment regarding the republican party is be strange also. In 2016 the republican party was the strongest it had been since the 1920's. And no matter what happens with Trump at least 40% of Americans will vote R every 2 years.

i was commenting on how the republican party seems to have sold its decency out to lowest common denominator politics. trump was once the outsider candidate, no? witness the astounding silence of republicans over most of his misdeeds.

People drift right as they age. Very few young people are right leaning as youths unless they are trying to be edgy. Talking about how few young Tories there are is rather pointless.

Trump is an outgrowth of the tea party movement that took place under Obama. It didn't matter to most of his voters who ran as long as they billed themself as a Washington outsider. Your typical voter loathes Washington elitism and corruption more than anything else. Racism, sexism, whatever democrats want to blame, it still came down to Clinton representing the establishment and Trump representing the people that want to piss on them.

so they swapped political sophisticate corruption for good old fashioned real estate huckster corruption. right. it’s not exactly as if they nominated a tribune of the people to clear the streets, is it? trump is probably a whole lot more criminal in his past than most d.c. politicos.

also gotta love the washington outsider with paul manafort and roger stone on his campaign team. i mean you can’t get more outsider than them right?

i’m sick of elites making me feel small – let’s elect a racist and a sexist so i don’t feel so belittled by those yale types!

he's also regularly in parliament off his nut on cocaine (it ruined his leadership bid). can spot it from a mile off.

I do think that the Republicans engaging in triumphalism are really dumb. Clinton did get 3 million more votes which counts for something. There has been studies that showed that Trump radicalized a lot of people against his ideas too due to his personality flaws and mismanagement.
