Value is created whenever work is performed. Unless we start doing things that drastically undermine our productivity like universalizing green projects with no payback or overregulation of business or crushing taxes, we'll keep expanding. If humanity starts moving back towards socialism you could then worry.
i agree. the main threat to our civilisation today is unprofitable green projects.
it's indicative of jay's position re: global warming - green projects have no payback because a) he doesn't believe there's a dire need to curtail CO2 emissions, b) if there is a dire need, technology/the REEEE MARKET will come out with a solution, and c) having a planet for his progeny to live on isn't of any value

No, it's not. There is nothing in Trump's time as president that leads me to think he operates on higher level than that or makes sophisticated plans and strategy.

Should we rename this the 'War with Iran' thread? As its going to be the next war.

Here's an interesting article

This week, National Security Adviser John Bolton claimed any new deal would need to “eliminate Iran’s nuclear weapons program”. At the same time, Trump reiterated the desire to stop Iran gaining a nuclear weapon when he told reporters: “They’re not going to have a nuclear weapon … We’re not going to have Iran have a nuclear weapon.”

The problem is, nobody has claimed Iran is, or has any plans to, develop nuclear weapons.

Indeed, paragraph three of the JCPOA’s preamble notes that “Iran reaffirms that under no circumstances will Iran ever seek, develop or acquire any nuclear weapons”. So we now have the rather strange situation where the White House has pulled out of an agreement in which Iran undertook never to develop nuclear weapons, in order to get it to renegotiate a deal in which Tehran presumably will be asked to undertake never to develop nuclear weapons.

And to weaken the efficacy of this stance even further, one of the leading advocates of this policy is Bolton, the same person who infamously declared in the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq that “we are confident that Saddam Hussein has hidden weapons of mass destruction”.

Why would a country with vast oil reserves wish to enrich uranium? To build nuclear power plants? When oil is already owned by the state and thus essentially free?

Why would a country with vast oil, gas and coal reserves have a nuclear program?

The US should stop enriching uranium and shut down its nuclear plants immediately or face obliteration.

yes why would a country with vast oil reserves wish to diversify its energy supply and economy when all of its adversaries in the region set the international price of oil?

why is saudi arabia investing so heavily in green energy? i mean why would they want to when they have SO MUCH OIL?!? suspicious ...

Energy 101

Different sources of energy are different:
Cost/Joule
Mass/Joule

As such some sources of energy are cost effective for static power generation, some for transport, some can also be used to synthesise high value goods such as plastics.

Price can fluctuate due to market conditions, instability of supply, depletion of supply, the weather, the whims of a retarded man-baby and his evangelical cronies who seem determined to start a war etc.

It can make financial or strategic sense to sell one form of fuel, say oil - which is sought after and highly valued for its efficiency in transportation thanks to hits high energy density, and use the money earned to buy another form, say coal - which is cheap but bulky, or uranium, for static power generation.

It would make no sense to burn oil to generate electricity and try to run aeroplanes on coal or make drinks bottles out of uranium - that would be silly!

Often clever people choose to have a diversified economy and power generation mix rather than suffer Dutch disease and dependence on one sole wasteful power source - even if they have lots of it.

For example, even the not so clever countries have figured out it makes sense not to use oil for power generation but to use it for higher value purposes or export it and import uranium and use that instead:
https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/styles/medium/public/2017-12/capture_0.png

The United States imports most of the uranium it uses as fuel
Owners and operators of U.S. nuclear power reactors purchased the equivalent of about 43 million pounds of uranium in 2017. About 7% of the uranium delivered to U.S. reactors in 2017 was produced in the United States and 93% came from other countries.

Sources and shares of U.S. purchases of uranium produced in foreign countries in 2017

Canada–35%
Australia–20%
Russia–18%
Kazakhstan–12%
Uzbekistan–5%
Hungary, Malawi, Namibia, Niger, South Africa, Ukraine, and unknown–10%
https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/ind … lear_where

It can also be good to encourage advanced industry, such as nuclear power, or the population will just sit back and get fat as they burn oil profligately.

For example:

America’s military are in a weak state of readiness to take on major-power enemies, despite a big increase in the Pentagon’s budget.

Two thirds of US armed forces personnel are overweight or obese and many are often tired through lack of sleep.

A study of 18,000 randomly selected servicemen and women across all the armed forces — conducted by Rand Corporation, a think tank that advises the US government on national security — revealed that nearly 66 per cent were judged to be fat.

Sure, but do you trust Iran? Would you like to live in a world where they have nuclear weapons? I'm all for reducing the embargoes and allowing them to reenter the world markets, but I draw the line at allowing them to build nuclear enrichment facilities.

The Shah was overthrown more than 40 years ago. It's ancient history. We should move on, but not with nuclear technology.

No-one, not even the Iranians, is talking about Iran having nuclear weapons.
They agreed not to pursue them and thats what the agreement and inspection process was delivering.

Although Israel has them so we've already crossed the Rubicon in terms of letting belligerent religious-fundamentalists who run their country on end-of-times fables have nuclear weapons.

I would certainly trust the government of Iran ahead of the perma-tanned rapist you currently have with his fat finger on the biggest button.

Before the current set of embargoes they were allowed to sell the all the low-enriched uranium they produced over the 300kg limit, now they aren't allowed to do so, so are stockpiling.
You need several thousand kg to produce enough material to start making enough weapons grade material, you also need several thousand centrifuges.
Before the nuclear deal (that Trump has now walked away form) they had both the required amounts of refined uranium and centrifuges required( vast majority of these either decommissioned and removed or Stuxnet'ted), now because of that deal they don't they were further from having any chance of nuclear weapons now than they were 10 years ago... Now Trump has decided to reverse this.

I am, yes. I'm not advocating invasion. I think Trump in general is doing a good job on foreign policy. He's been tough, but with an end goal of making deals. I think he's done a good job with North Korea, I think he's doing what is long overdue with China, and he called Europe out on their military spending. These are all good things. Right now he's escalating with Iran to bring them back to the negotiating table. This shit is working. He's certainly made Obama look like a completely ineffectual pussy.

His best case scenario is like the NAFTA thing where it's essentially the same as before, but with a new name. Though with Iran, his administration is the one that blew up the first deal for no reason, so there is little cause for them to trust the US would keep their word on a new one.

There isn't a plan to any of this. I explained this before to Larsen or whatever. He is basically acting out in every direction just like your average 70 something American baby boomer would if they were given immense power. The only reason he is in power is because of a flaw in our electoral system and not because he is a grand strategist or mastermind.

If you want to discuss the minor points of success or failure, that's fine. But don't be stupid enough to think that there is a Trump foreign policy plan.

At this point 'The Great Deal Maker' has not achieved a single deal or delivered on a single election commitment and there's nothing in sight.
He's made a few moronic unilateral moves, all of which have been predictably countered, he's actually got nowhere.

'bring Iran back to the negotiating table' to negotiate what? No-one knows and nothing is working.
Iran isn't going to give up its nuclear program and will sit out any sanctions. The rest of the world thinks they're dumb and will likely ignore them.
Trump can have as many twitter tantrums as he likes, China doesn't care.

The only foreign policy plan is that of Bolton and the Evangelicals who want to annihilate the middle east for Israel's benefit.
