massive potential to abuse, then, if you end up getting pulled over by your twin brother who is also a highway cop.

The govt already reads all your texts, emails, listens to your mobile conversations etc.
Unless you're storing child porn or bomb-making recipes having your phone opened up is probably not worth worrying about.

i notice he sidestepped my question about contactless cards because ‘PINs are passwords in my brain’.

Lmao, I sidestepped it because it's completely irrelevant. Oh no, the man knows about my purchases of lucozade and baccy. Like, what?

I actually asked my bank when I received my contactless card to not activate the contactless portion of it. They said no problem, it won't get activated until you use it, and the first time it'll ask for your pin to confirm acitvation. I was more worried about people skimming my card in the street, even looked into a faraday cage wallet when it turned out halifax lied and it was active by default, but it actually is a convenience worthy of the risk. Saves considerable time due to how slow card readers are.

cool. so to clarify, you hate faceID on a mobile phone that is literally open to any legal authority or intelligence service anyway, and want to ‘retain control’ over your privacy and security. you insist on a 3-second PIN rather than the 2-second faceID.

but you’re cool not using a PIN on your bank card, which can be found by anyone in the street or taken from your person just as your phone could, and have your entire bank account depleted by someone on a bar crawl. ‘the convenience is worthy of the risk’.

...

do you have child porn on your phone or something? you’re adamant about keeping a PIN on your phone but you’re cool with a PIN-free, security-free payment card?

Idk how you handle your funds but personally I don't keep all my money on my debit card. Much easier to prove fraud to your bank than to prove, say, dirty cop to a jury. I'm also not in the habit of losing my debit card. I think I've misplaced one since I started banking, and found it somewhere in my room immediately after requesting it be cancelled.

He only has £5 in his bank account

Most of the complaints about Facebook from Reddit and other internet people boils down to them being upset that they don't get attention on Facebook. You just know that all of the people who talk about how it is ruining society and needs to be destroyed aren't getting likes on their nerd shit updates or happy birthdays.

it bothers me that i have never had a facebook account but facebook still has a profile for me based on all the people i do know who do have profiles. I have never consented to my information being collected or kept by Facebook. What is my recourse? Is it ok for my information to be collected simply because someone else who has my information opts in to a service?

can you consent on behalf of another person?

how do you mean, ken? they have created a fake/placeholder profile for you? or they have merely built a picture of your social network using data/interactions? didn't you consent to the user agreement for whatsapp/instagram or any other apps within their system? are they collecting your 'information' or just meta-data gleaned from the fact that people on their network are interacting with you?

i don't have instagram. They have built a picture of my social network using other people's data/interactions. Whether you call it "information" or meta-data, it's the same thing - it's a profile of me based on other people's connections and interactions, none of which i consented to.  Whatsapp collects phone numbers and contacts - they don't and shouldn't require linking any personal details.

If you gave someone else your data they can do what they like with it, unless you make people sign an NDA when you give them your email and mobile number. Do you make people sign NDAs Ken?

Its also amazing how much data fishing there is on social media
"Enter your birth year to discover which dog represents your birth year!"
"Which aeroplane represents your birth month?"
"Enter your middle name to win a token!"

My workplace published everyone's birthday for the monthly cake day, dumb idiots.

I'd be a lot happier if my bank accounts and other critical  institutions didn't depend on easily found information for their security.

Prime Video has named its cast/bio overlay "x-ray." Nothing about the word "x-ray" suggests that this is what it is. It's not even that useful of a feature. It should link to IMDB instead. Gimmicky brand naming seriously needs to stay off of my UIs.

Also Amazon's wishlist is still slow, cloggy, and useless. How the heck am I supposed to find a book I added in 2016 when it takes seven years to load each tiny chunklet of items? Dread having to reload it when accidentally closed. Still, at least you can have folders on it. One thing Steam doesn't do.
