1 GB to 2GB upgrade

Alright,

So I have this 1 GB (2x512MB) of Kingston PC3200 ValueRam in my machine right now, and wanted to upgrade to 2 GB. Thing is, like I mentioned, I have 2 sticks of 512MB (most probably running in Dual Channel), and not a 1GB stick.

So basically the question is, if I want to upgrade to 2 GB without having to get rid of this 1 GB I already have, which choice would be better ?

1. Get another 2 sticks of 512 MBsKingston ValueRam, which would make it 2x512+2x512.

2. Get a stick of 1GB, which would obviously make it 1GB+2x512MB.

...or

3. It really doens't make any difference.

Or finally

4. It really isnt recommended to have that many memory modules (dunno, just throwing out a possibility here)

I found memeory to be so cheap.. that I just went out and bought 2 1GB sticks..... for like 138$ delivered from Newegg. Woulda cost me like 100$ for (2) 512MB sticks, so I didn't sweat it and just paid the difference, then stuck the 1gig that I had previously into my gf's machine giving her 1.5GB.

2GB DOES make a difference. I can vouch

It makes a huge difference. Okay, not huge, but you can't run dual channel mode with 3 sticks. I run 4x512 in dual channel mode and it works great.

Quad dual channel would give you beautiful performance. I went from one gig to two, and can run everything maxed.

ddr is only dual channel, it cant run quad channel otherwise it will run at ddr 800 which makes ddr2 pointless.

It'll run better, plus you're ready to upgrade to 3, or even 4 gb later on.

Wouldn't quad channel max at 1600, even? Doesn't HyperTransport-technology in processors support the idea of quad speed ddr w. 4 sticks?

no, if there is a quad channel it would only do 800mhz since 200 X 4= 800... ddr400 is ran at 200mhz when not in dual channel mode.

HTT doesnt made ram run at quad channel, they are just like the fsb which determines the speed of the communication between the cpu and ram

I'd recommend selling off the ram you have and getting 2x1gb sticks.

only if you overclock it, but it will wear out in about 3 years. so i guess you might of upgraded in that time

Stays the same unless the RAM goes bad.. in which, your computer wouldn't start up

it can still start up, but can throw memory errors and such at you and BSOD and CTD alot, don't count on something not booting to tell it's fucked.

as regard to dual channel... *sigh*
dual channel has nothing to do with the speed in mhz its the memory bandwidth

single channel is 64 bit
dual channel is 128 bit
the reason you see people saying it's running at 400mhz, when it's saying it's running at 200mhz (it will say 400mhz effective) is because it's DDR, Double Data Rate SDRAM
SD RAM (secure digital) ran at it's speed, end of story
DDR is effectively double the speeds, thus when you overclock things like... Video cards it will say "memory timing of 600mhz" and you think? thats shit?! but it's effectively 1200mhz.. which obviously isn't shit
and no DDR2 G/DDR3 and DDR4 DO NOT run at 2, 3 and 4 x the mhz rated. they're just faster internally on a nanosecond scale

there is no such thing as quad channel so abolish that
get 2x1GB sticks instead of getting 2 more 512mb sticks..
you will get dual channel with 4 x 512mb but you won't be able to put the latency as low, or overclock(if you do) so much, or set it to T1 timing over T2( a significant difference if you just use stock timings)
if you cant afford 2, get 1, live with single channel (i doubt u'd notice a difference in truth anyway)
then when you can, get another one

I agree, even though most mobo's have 4 slots, alot of them run better on two sticks. I had probs when I added 2 more DDR 400 Corsair 512 XMS sticks to my A8N-SLI mobo.

I went fom 1 gb 2X512mb to 3 gb 2gb 1x2 and the other two 2x512. it made my load times to about 30 seconds i can run my settings on medium flawlessly but i havent tried on high i have been meaning to though.

Eh, no.
It will "start up" but it won't get past POST. All it will do is sit on a black screen and beep.
A complete and successful start-up is after the user has logged on successfully.
