Hey, I have just recently seen a sudden peak in my cpu temp.  It typically runs around 100F but in the past week hit upwards of 125F and 130F.

I think that the heatsink fan is dead, but its still getting 3000 rpms...

Could someone point me in the direction of a good new heatsink for cheap or any ideas of cooling.

I have three fans in the back and 1 in the front along with the cpu fan, no overclocking.

What's the processor?

The old k7's ran pretty hot.

You may also want to clean crap off the heatsink, typically make sure everything is turned off and then blow a compressed air can through the heatsink.

Have you had the pc open whilst it's powered on and made sure the fan is spinning?

Heatsink is clean as a whistle and new grease under it. ( Transfer grease added this morning, no improvement)

Fan spins, along with the 4 around it.

if it is the palermo core than that isn't too bad.  Assuming that this is under some load.

At 1% load...

put it under load (try using prime95) and report back with the temperatures.

Also, what setup do you have?  You said you have 4 fans around it, what directions are they blowing?

I always recommend intake from the front and outtake through the back

Code:

Under load it bounces around 132F

Using a nice tech diagram

How did you apply the thermal grease? Keep it as thick as a peice of paper.

Also, what program are you using to report temps? I would verify idle temps in BIOS before i buy anything. Software conflicts happen more then you think.

Speedfan

And I used about a 4th of the tube (tiny tube), it was thin enough that i could put the heatsink on without having to wiggle the grease out from under it.

All you shoulkd use is a drop the size of a small pea. THen spread it around with a scraper, or a cretid/hotel card...Until you cover the surface....

Id say you get this one....

I would reccomend this one, but if its anything like "Venus 12"(the one I have) its noisy as hell....

If you look at the case I am getting: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6811129155
its got this funky little cooling thing, so the heatsink I would imagine would have to be pretty small if I want to use the ducting.

Well, with that case, either of the fans would fit...

IDK, maybe read up on the compatibility lists with those cases...

it is an excellent case, but for all the builds I have used it for I just completely took the duct out.
