I am curious what Mac said to set up this dinner (date?) with this girl who apparently is going out with someone else. I know people cheat and so on, but I've no personal experience in how people start down that road. Is she picking up what he's putting down or was it billed as something else.

I have hooked up with IIRC 4 girls with boyfriends and one with a husband.

It is as easy as asking them to hang out one night. A trustworthy girl should say that they have a boyfriend that wouldn't be cool with them hanging out with a guy late at night. But a girl who isn't would go along with you. At that point you already have a foot in the door. Treat it like any other date and under no circumstances do you mention her boyfriend in any context whatsoever.

I am not tricking this girl somehow by offering her a job or something. We have a ton in common and she lives a few blocks over while her boyfriend is often not around among other things.

If you like a girl you know has a boyfriend just approach her like you would if she didn't have a boyfriend.

i think you need to date a happy, well adjusted girl who is actually ready for an adult relationship and stop fucking around with high-school sluts who leave one relationship to begin one with you. that's not a promising start.

i'm open to the idea that, if i were married to someone for a long time, infidelity could creep in. that's because a long-term relationship can get stale, needs to be managed, paid attention to, continually kept fresh. but i've never been there yet. i've had several significant long-term relationships and i'm quite content that there was no cheating in any of them. try meeting someone when you're in the right headspace, someone with their own head screwed on properly. i think you'd be surprised. there are a lot of genuinely nice girls out there who will give a lot to be in a stable relationship without being fucked around.

I have only dated two girls that didn't have some sort of diagnosed or undiagnosed mental issue. One of them still cheated on her boyfriend. I don't think there are many girls with their "head screwed on properly" in the first place. And among that group I would argue that most of them are untrustworthy too. It is not me. This is endemic to our generation. Maybe our entire culture.
