Long? I'm glad I don't live in America - two years of preparation, nothing happens for two years then it all starts again.
Fuck Israel
Its looking more and more likely that Turnbull is going to be remembered as the dumbest PM in Australian history - calling an early double dissolution election and then thoroughly losing it.
Also WTF are student visas for six year olds (and their parents/guardians) about exactly?
It seems Sydney property developers have photos of someone in govt doing something illegal.

You can get student visas for primary and secondary school children. In some circumstances the guardians can get a guardian visa.Dilbert_X wrote:

I don't know, at least he gets to contest an election.Dilbert_X wrote:

The double dissolution is a dumb option, especially in the current climate of dissatisfaction with the political establishment. I mean sure the last Senate wasn't exactly easy and people got in through preference swapping but the signs point to a similarly fractured Senate. Possibly moreso. Xenophon's likely to do well, Pauline Hanson may even grace the Senate with her presence. Then you have the likes of Jacquie Lambie, Ricky Muir and maybe Glenn Lazarus and John Madigan who actually look like they might get decent voter support this time now they have something of a profile.
But then there's the other point - does anyone remember the reason the double dissolution election was called? What policy it's supposedly being fought on?
Nope. Not really. For the record it was the Australian Building and Construction Commission legislation over beating up and/or controlling the unions depending on who you talk to.
Definitely a risky move by Turnbull. Too early to say whether it was too risky though.

It's super risky because, like you said, he's called an election for a reason that isn't even really remembered, much less championed.
His whole campaign would be so much stronger if he had tied a key policy to the reason why he called an election in the first place. Too late for that now.

That's the main problem right there. The Liberals can't champion any changes they've brought in over the past 3 years in government.Jaekus wrote:

All they can talk up is what they've opposed. Boats. Carbon tax.
There's no policy. Just opposition to policy.
Because allowing unchecked migration is a policy and not allowing it isn't a policy?AussieReaper wrote:

They're both policies - and not letting people migrate with no checks and not allowing people smugglers to profit from illegal migration is good policy.
Fuck Israel
There's never been unchecked migration in Australian history. At least, not since white people overtook the place. Don't be so easily misled.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigrati … n_Act_1901
Jewish political activist Egon Kisch from Czechoslovakia, who was exiled from Germany for opposing Nazism, arrived in Australia in 1934. The Government of Joseph Lyons went to extraordinary lengths to exclude Kisch, including using the dictation test. Kisch was fluent in a number of European languages, and after completing passages in several languages, he finally failed when he was tested in Scottish Gaelic. The officer who tested him had grown up in northern Scotland, and did not have a particularly good grasp of Scottish Gaelic himself. In the High Court case of R v Wilson; ex parte Kisch the court found that Scottish Gaelic was not within the fair meaning of the Act, and overturned Kisch's convictions for being an illegal immigrant. The failure to exclude Kisch brought the dictation test into widespread public ridicule.
Yurp even tried to stopped a guy from talking about nazi atrocities. yurp.
