As opposed to there being nothing to stop you from going super bankrupt before. There are no longer caps on coverage. People with preexisting conditions cannot be denied insurance now. Every insurer have a coverage minimum  standard. Low income workers can get subsidized insurance. Medicaid coverage expanded.

It isn't as good as universal healthcare but it is a step in the right direction and can be built upon towards a total NHS. Many people will be helped.

Ken would say that it passing is a sign that both parties are the same because even though it was a party line vote. Democrats are obviously the same because they couldn't get a full NHS.

no actually my problems with the ACA are well documented here and are typical KEN thoughts - the insurance industry had a huge part in drafting ACA and getting it passed.  It's sticking a piece of gum in a plumbing leak.  A small step in the right direction, but severely watered down after it went through the insurance industry cheese-grater.  There is no bargaining power by the government.  The medical and insurance industry will make record profits.  It is a very expedient solution to a problem that continues to need to be addressed.  I also think it is really really early to gauge the overall success of the plan itself.  I have no problem acknowledging it gave insurance to millions of people.  And I personally benefited from the ACA in the form of lower premium and better overall coverage.

They kept the insurance companies in place as the middleman for two reasons: 1) it meant the insurance companies wouldn't lock the government up with decades of lawsuits and 2) it kept a buffer between the plebs and the government. Instead of the government denying claims it's the big bad insurance company. Better politics.

What we have now is essentially a single payer health system with the insurance companies handling customer service for a small profit. All policies are dictated by HHS.

In what way? Everything costs more now. The whole point was to stop the astronomical price increases, no? Sure, maybe 1% of the population now has access to health care they didn't have before, but 100% are paying more for it now, whether directly or indirectly. How much more debt did we pile on in order to subsidize coverage? It's a flaming dumpster.

Nearly 9 million people gained insurance last year, a win for “Obamacare” as the president’s signature health care law expanded Medicaid and opened health insurance exchanges. And yet, 33 million Americans, 10.4 percent of the U.S. population, still went without health insurance for the entirety of 2014. Millions more were uninsured for at least part of the year.1 New data released this month shows they were disproportionately poor, black and Hispanic; 4.5 million of them were children.

Who gives a fuck if the insurance companies sue the government? The government will win and the claim expenses. As for denying claims... you don't make claims in an NHS you make appointments.

What you have now is a cluster fuck of monopolies charging through the roof with no competition and a law forcing people to sign up.

Lol insurance suing governments. Jay kinda forgets the fact that governments can bar themselves from any litigation. How have you not heard of sovereign immunity. Congress can easily pass a bill saying 'fuck you insurance, ps were immune from suits kthnxbai'.

I can see that a good number of grassroots Republicans would be thoroughly disenfranchised with the small number of 'old white men' who think they own the Republican party.

Between Trump and his "I want to make America great again" and Clinton's "I want America to make me great again" it would actually be a hard choice for me. From the outside Obama has been useless, Clinton isn't going to be better but I don't really see her starting any major wars. Trump is a complete unknown but not wholly stupid and he's only beholden to himself - that can be good or bad.

There probably won't but there certainly could.

Simply redeploy half the military into the medical industry. In one fell swoop govt spending would be unchanged, their labour and expenses would change from useless to useful.

Wouldn't it have been more useful for you to train up as an EMT and maintain an ambulance than learn to fire a machine gun and maintain a Humvee?

Republican Party isn't split. They will go off the deep end with Trump when the time comes. The GOP exist solely to funnel money to the rich. They aren't going to stand up for principles.

When the leader of the party doesn't want to endorse the presumptive leader of the party, and everyone wants him to run instead, the party is split.
When the every republican president or candidate in the last 20 years (can't go further back than that - they're all dead), doesn't even want to go to the convention - the party is split.

I would never vote for Bloomberg, I hate Clinton and Trump would destroy our economy. I voted for Gary Johnson in 2012.

I have to see what positions Trump has in the general election. If it's the same rhetoric he used during the primaries, no way. I still hold out hope it was just nonsense and he doesn't believe most of it.

I would actually vote for Bernie though, not because I like any of his idiotic policies, but because Bernie and a republican legislature would be hilarious, and thus a less destructive fuck you to DC than voting for Trump would be.

You're stupid. Do you not understand how common law with a supreme court works? I'm not talking about civil suits, I'm talking about constitutional challenges. Nationalizing 10% of our economy and turning millions of people into government employees against the will would not pass constitutional muster.

dude, just wiki sovereign immunity. It's been interpreted through multiple supreme court cases that sovereign immunity exists in both and federal governments. You can't sue a government because they passed legislation affecting business'. Otherwise every single business regulation out there would've been struck out. It is a legal absurdity to think governments can't pass legislation that affects the rights of business' and people.

Having an NHS will pass a constitutional muster. I don't think you understand how NHS works at all. It doesn't force doctors to become public servants, private practice still exists. in a federal system like aus, healthcare is funded by the federal govt but still operated by state governments.
