Having seen The Martian, I now understand why it was put in the "comedy" category.

13 Hours : 7/10

That movie was about 45 minutes too long. It just dragged with constant shoot outs that got less exciting as they went. I wonder how much of the story is actually true. Was probably unfair to the CIA.

Well, the category "hard sci-fi with some exceptions for dramatic purposes" wouldn't be that popular.

Except that I mean half the film is gallows humour, where Damon contemplates the fact that in a likelihood he will die alone.

The first 20ish minutes are pretty eye rolling but the movie starts to pick up pace and become decent after that. The action scenes aren't anything special but the jokes or references can be funny at times. I would watch Dead Pool 2.

Seriously it's like the entire movie was an ad for smart phones. Many gags recycled from the first movie. Felt like a straight-to-video which inexplicably saw a ~500 million box office. First movie was better, but both are superior to Pixels.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
I'm not entirely sure what the message of this movie was, or if there was one. Dracula spends a great deal of time being taught that family was more important than whether or not his grandson would manifest vampire powers. And a few minutes after he finally came to terms with it, his grandson manifested vampire powers and everyone was elated. Nothing learned.

Also, why a bunch of mutant bat people would betray an ancient, all-powerful vampire just to torment a 5-year-old is beyond me.

The Big Short - 8

It's completely mind blowing how you can have such a fraudulent system fail so hard and nothing be done about it and no one in America seems to care.

The Big Short - 8/10 - Well produced and acted, made it easy enough to understand which was an achievement.
Steve Jobs - 9/10 - Fassbender was surprisingly convincing as Jobs, it explored his relationships with key people and his personality which was interesting.
Gods of Egypt - 1/10 - 1 point exclusively for the actresses eye make-up
Spotlight 9/10 - Great film, well timed.
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi - 7/10 - Basically a long gun-fight and being Michael Bay no real depth and repetitive.
Deadpool - 7/10 - A bit different, a bit too wordy, plenty of ultraviolence.

New X-Men trailer. This looks awful.

I was listening to a podcast about pop culture longevity who argued that people 20 or 30 years from now are going to look back on our comic book movies and wonder what the hell we were thinking.

The Revenant was pretty cool, I loved the soundtrack and the scenery, and I liked the story. 1/1

Watched The Martian this morning. Despite hearing that it was surprisingly good, it was still surprisingly good. Yeah, science!

Together with Ant Man and Guardians of the Galaxy my favourite super hero movies so far.
I really can't stand all the pathos, drama and villainy cliches of all the other super heros anymore.

I also started reading the comics, the Deadpool and Cable series in particular, and I'm really looking forward to the sequel.

I think batman and superman movies will outlast us. Big movies based around second rate characters like Gambit, Black Panther, Wonder Woman, Dr. Strange etc. will go away god willing.

I am not attacking all comic book movies though. There are a bunch planned out that sound cool and you wouldn't know it was based off a comic book unless someone told you because it doesn't have superman type characters and story in it.

What about Batman makes him less second-rate than any of those? At least Superman has the whole Christ complex thing going on. To be honest, I'd rather go see Dr. Strange than another Batman flick for the sheer novelty of a magic-powered superhero.

I've said it before, but i'll say it again.  Movie studios need to serialize the comic book characters into movies that come out like 5x per year.  Hell, even more if they lower the price a bit.  I would totally watch serialized comic book movies in the theater once a month for like $10/month.

They're just going to do two or three movies and then reboot. For. A. Long. Time.

Meanwhile, I suppose there's always the TV shows.

I meant in terms of $$$ and mass appeal. I don't like Batman either. Never cared for Batman or Superman.

I actually like reboots better than the originals of some of this stuff. The suicide squad looks cool. Another batman vs joker movie would be lame.

I didn't read any reviews and went into it completely cold. It would have rated 8/10, the extra 1/10 was for Gal Gadot - even though she's jewish.

Clearly she's no Xena but has a lot of potential, plus there's a whole cosplay future ahead.
