I had the problem CTD after joining a server, but then I read somewere on the forum that you can fix this by changing from softwere to hardwere in bf2. Trust me, I've tried everything but this seems to work! after you done this the sound will be pretty shity quality. But! to fix this you need to...

1. Click on the Start button
2. Click on Run
3. Type dxdiag in the text field
4. Click on Sound (on the top of the window)
5. Chaing the accelerator to Easy Acceleration
6. Then click quit

I'm not saying that bf2 will not CTD but it worked for me...
