You took Pell grants. That's basically free college money for poor people. How can you justify that while being small government?
Because I'd be stupid to refuse free money I qualified for? Write your congressman and tell him that you feel it's unfair that GI Bill payments are tax free.SuperJail Warden wrote:

I'm also taking the free $5,000 tax rebate New York State is giving me for putting solar panels on my roof. Of course, I paid $40,000 in income tax last year, and $13,000 in property tax, and who knows how much in sales tax, so I don't feel too bad about it. Yes, I paid more in taxes last year than my entire four years of tuition cost the government. How about dem apples?

sterling demonstration of political conviction and principles here. decry the system whilst rinsing it and using its benefactions to self-style yourself as middle-class.Jay wrote:

hey, dipshit... that production and industry puts loads of Americans in jobs. it's not just about the futility of the warfare itself. or the fact the product is destroyed, surplus, or redundant. hitler's roads weren't used either. it put people in work.disagree. Spending a million dollars on a missile and then launching it into the desert is entirely destructive. Nothing real is produced. It's akin to paying people to dig ditches all day and then filling them in at the end of their shift

It's a misallocation of resources and could be spent elsewhere on productive aspects of society. Pretty much every economist, including your Beau Keynes, agreed on this. As a short term fix to keep people employed during a recession? Questionable, but maybe. As a longterm solution to unemployment? You're off your rocker.uziq wrote:

It is true.Jay wrote:
Not really sure why you all think this is the winning argument against me. Repeating it three times doesn't make it any more true.
You don't see complaining about how high taxes are counter-productive, and choosing to live in the highest taxed part of America is a contradiction?Of course, I paid $40,000 in income tax last year, and $13,000 in property tax
There are plenty of places you could go where there are lower taxes and higher freedoms, but no.
That's exactly what it is, that its a thinly disguised workfare scheme, thoroughly unproductive and the by-product is people in the third world have to die on a rolling cyclical basis shows the people backing it are off their rocker. You bought in at the bottom, well done.As a longterm solution to unemployment? You're off your rocker.
Lets split the difference and call it angsty fat-boy rock. And it's punk, not metal, grandpa.

Fuck Israel
So did anyone read Harper Lee's follow up to to Kill A Mockingbird? When they announced the book I thought Harper Lee was already dead for decades. The story of how they managed to get a dying old woman to publish a book she never wanted anyone to read sounded terrible. A lot of people are really upset about the book too because of how it is ruins Atticus Finch's character.
I read a TIME article listing '10 beautiful quotes' from the book and every single line was pretty unremarkable in comparison to a bajillion other 'literary' authors nowadays. I don't blame Harper lee and I don't blame the publishing industry though. this sort of book is an excuse to print money, and that doesn't come around very other in 'serious' fiction or novels nowadays. but it is definitely overhyped, without question.
I wonder how many people pre-ordered 'Go Set a Watchman' without having read (or remembered well) the first book because that's what all their friends were doing, and now they aren't sure what to do with it. Were nippy headlines like "While not a good novel, 'Go Set a Watchman' is an artifact worth reading" just what Harper Lee was looking forward to when she allowed it to see the light of day? If her intention was to 'stir up some shit,' I can respect that because it certainly worked.
It makes me wonder how long authors should delay dropping bombshells such as gay Dumbledores on their readers to generate the maximum effect. If I was still in high school, I'd love to draw up every barest scrap of contradiction I could find in Watchman just to rub it in the face of my know-it-all literature teacher.

Reading the first book of The Strain, by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan.
Somewhat nastier vampires than the fags in the faggy movies and in True Blood. Pretty good stuff.

You shouldn't use the word fag. It is not nice to gay people.
Gay people are ok, just like regular nice people. Fags on the other hand are kinda like Androo that you need to ban from certain places.SuperJail Warden wrote:

That is like saying black people are okay but calling every black who annoys you a nigger. Fag is the gay equivalent of nigger. Both words should be treated the same.

I have always been against saying fag and using gay as a pejorative. I have made this point here before.Jay wrote:

Whatever, homophobe.
I tried reading the hadith. Basically the sayings and deeds of Mohammad. It is supposed to be one of the most important text in Islam. Apparently it is one of the most quoted text in Islamic law. It was pretty lousy. Repeated itself often and I didn't get anything out of it. A lot of it is useless bullshit like.
Tl;Dr Got any books about non-Abrahamic religion that is enlightening?

I was hoping to get stories of conquest and stuff but whatever. I give up on Islam. Many people who say Islam is a lesser religion are Islamophobes (Ultrafunkla probably is one) but as far as literature goes, it is really uninspiring. I think I will try something from out of the Levant now. Suggestions?Sa’d bin Abu Waqqas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when he asked, “Is anyone of you unable to earn a thousand good deeds?” One of those present asked: “How can one earn thousand good deeds in a day?” He (PBUH) replied, “By saying: Subhan Allah a hundred times, then one thousand good deeds will be recorded for him or one thousand sins will be blotted out from his record.” [Muslim]

read some stuff by alan watts. It's fairly easily digestible stuff on eastern religion written by a westerner.
I agree with Macbeth re: gay and fag. It's not nice and people should be ashamed when they use it. I've been consciously trying to correct myself. My eyes were opened when I was talking to a gay friend of mine.

Same. I have a lifetime habit of calling stuff gay that is difficult to break. I just don't have the association in my head between gay people and the word in my head. I dunno, difficult to explain.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

I don't either - you don't need to explain it. The fact is that people DO have an association with it.Jay wrote:

I make sure I don't do it around my gay friends because my wife gives me shit, but a lot of them even use it in the same way. It's just a generational marker at this point.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:
