I have clothing, shelter, food & water in a tramping pack ready to go at a moment's notice, plus three other gas cookers and a bunch of other useful shit in various locations at my place.

That you idiots actually think you'll ever need this shit.
If this hit a few hundred KMs north-east of where it did, I probably would have.

And yes dilbert, condoms are part of the kit   Besides the obvious, they're also good for carrying water in a pinch.

Just because there is a disaster doesn't mean people won't charge you for anything you may need following said disaster, and it is highly likely that electricity and communications will be down or severely interrupted.  Credit/Debit cards will be worthless.
So will standard issue currency. Gold or (conflict) diamonds FTW!

That said, no I'm not prepared, I can't prepare, because I live in shitty Holland. When shit happens the only thing I'd relly need is a decent car and a stash of petrol. I'd just get the hell out of here and wait it out in Russia.

U.S. Southern Command: "There is no way we can keep Ebola [contained] in West Africa. If it comes to the Western Hemisphere, many countries have little ability to deal with an outbreak. If it breaks out, it’s literally, ‘Katie bar the door,’ and there will be mass migration into the United States."

How prepared am I?  Well I had a disaster kit before it was fashionable.  And by fashionable I mean before a series of earthquakes slapped the shit out of my city.

Disaster kits focus on short-term personal survival.  Water, baked beans and tents are all well and good, but....

For long-term personal survival, make sure you have some practical skills under your belt.  Know how to build and/or fix stuff.  Be ready and able to change careers/industries at the drop of a hat.

For long-term societal survival I recommend a government/court system which will effect quick and fair resolution of insurance disputes, and a local planning body which will consider both local wishes and the long term interests of the affected area.

Ready for it.
I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.
