american polygamists are in the king james version. a polygamist showed me specific references. also, so are american politicians, american people of every walk of life - just ask them. despite the separation of church and state and the founding of this country out of respite from religious persecution, today's america is saddled with the mythology that an ancient hebrew sky god chose this country to be it's designated flame-keepers.

why else would we invite an isreali pm to address a joint session of congress?

Fun fact: the LDS store sells King James bibles, and the church uses them. Their classes aren't exactly like attending Harvard Divinity School, though. I think people would be disappointed to hear how little the Book of Mormon and other fantastical materials are tossed about within those manicured brick walls.

If you like wearing expensive, uniform clothing and rubbing that (and your over-achieving wasp family) in the face of those regarded as token poor and otherwise below-average members, then the church could be the place for you. If you desire sanctuary under the roof of conservative peers after doing something like ejecting your homosexual 15-year-old from their home, then look no further. If you want to whisper nastiness behind a pregnant woman's back because she engaged in pre-marital sex, then you've found your perfect environment.

If that sounds a lot like other churches, it's no coincidence.

I have a highlighted bible too. I got it for my Confirmation.  I think it's inlaid in gold or something.  Personal inscription and everything.

I got to shake the hand of a bishop at my confirmation. I think they brought him over from Italy. No one could understand what he was saying but he looked like the Pope so it was good for taking pictures. I also learned how to make bread.

usually it's just the bishop of your local archdiocese.  They tend to be old and european-white looking.  I think the one that presided over my confirmation resigned over hiding sex offenders during the whole catholic priest sex thing a few years back.  Fucking weird to think about almost 20 years later.

It annoyed me that I had to put on a dress shirt and tie to go Sunday church. In the age of post-modernism and aggressive atheism, getting someone to even go to church is an accomplishment. God needs to at least meet someone half way and set a more relaxed dress code.

dressing up for 'sunday best' tends to be something that poor people do.

I got kicked out of the altar boys club at my church because I had blue hair and "it was a distraction."  It was really because the little old ladies in the front rows were mad their dyed purple hair didn't look as as mine.

I've said before that Buddhism is the last step from organized religion to Atheism.  It was a natural step for me to seek something spiritual without the built-in idea of a God (especially when I was seriously reading into Zen Buddhism and Alan Watts - he gets a little out there regarding a cosmic force, but it wasn't the same as the God I was brought up to know and learn about) before finally jettisoning that idea.  I don't know if looking back I would call my 18-20 year old self a buddhist, but i read pretty deeply on it and tried to follow some of the basic teachings.  I've always been into some vices though so I could never really find a harmony with the way I lived vs. the righteous way a buddhist was supposed to live.  And that's the same as I am now - I go on about the working class and living piously and how much i hate corporatocracy/kleptocracy, but I'm also living in Orange County, CA driving my car to my company that manufactures products in shit factories in Asia, etc. I am selfish in the fact that I don't want to severely inhibit my quality of life to take a strong stand against injustices I perceive happening around the world.  Life is a constant struggle, man.

TL;DR another self-pitying white dude toys with mahayana buddhism for a while to try and make him feel better about his first-world anxieties.

isn't this basically don draper and every self-involved consumerist of the 60's?

He's from California. No further explanation required.

I don't think you comprehended correctly.  Maybe you scanned the couple of sentences for a few buzz words then came out with that TLDR, or maybe you just wanted to make some pop culture reference? I wasn't self pitying when I was looking into buddhism - I was seeking something different from the religion that was forced upon me for the first 16 years of my life.  buddhism and eastern religious thought in general was a good segue to the atheism final form i ended up taking, and i think it's a natural path to go down when you're coming of age and trying to figure out what life means (or if there is any meaning, for that matter).  When I mentioned vices it had more to do with substance abuse in general and living a pretty wild life as opposed to feeling pity because i can't come to terms with my materialism.

but cool reference I guess?  I thought Mad Men was a terrible show personally.

Jay, you're a dumbo who boils everyone down to the neighborhood they are in, where they are from, the color of their skin or what clothes they wear.  It reeks of serious insecurity problems.  I'm sure you'll try to pretend it's all some joke but virtually all your commenting reflects this so maybe you should just take off your white wig and put down the gavel, Judge Judy.

i totally see where you're coming from, i'm just pointing out that white middle-class people experimenting with eastern faiths and buddhism is a bit of a cliché at this point. maybe they don't all take the 'spiritual search for meaning' as seriously as you do, but there are still plenty that fall into that trajectory. one of my good uni friends spent 3 months in an ashram in the himalayas and ended up coming home, because he said he went there to 'get away' and ended up being surrounded by fucking insufferable western dropouts. i was more referring to that kind of thing. as for the path towards atheism... well, i kind of see your point. western philosophy and the tradition of metaphysics – denuded theology – did start borrowing from buddhism and eastern/oriental sources in the mid-19th century. schopenhauer, who was in many ways one of the final nails in the western canon, the old pessimist crank, was really into his buddhism. the whole idea of will and representation comes from buddhism. but that's academic.

i've never seen mad men past the first 4-5 episodes, fyi. the show was sucky and the 'finale', ending on that weird salinger-meets-buddha note, sounds corny as hell.
