When asked whether he feels any remorse at what Australia is putting refugee children through he staunchly replied in the clumsiest way possible that he didn't, even suggesting that his policies were a kindness.
Later he responded to concerns about what exactly a "competitive tender process" on the submarine contract means by bizarrely suggesting that Labor wanted to give the contract to Russia and North Korea.
Later on when questioned about what exactly his Government's policy was when it came to the submarine contract he turned it into an attack on the previous government, saying they were responsible for "a Holocaust of job losses" in the defence sector.
Later still, when again questioned on his numerous broken election promises Abbott was finally open about it. Yes, they did break the clearly stated promise not to cut the ABC - "and it was a good thing we did" he proudly exclaimed. Why it was a good thing he didn't elaborate on but I suppose it's refreshing to get some straight-talk from the bloke.
Day four of "good government" ladies and gentlemen.
The funny thing is that I think this is actually a serious attempt by Tony Abbott to turn his fortunes around. I think he's bought some of the bullshit that's been said about him in certain sectors like "he's too nice" and "he's not tough enough" and he aims to rectify that. He wants to be seen as Tough Tony again, the one that turned into a superhero after MH17, the one that promised to shirt-front Vladimir Putin at an economic summit prompting Russia to send warships to patrol just outside Australian waters.
Basically for the next little while I think Tony's actually going to be unapologetically brash and reckless, he's going to stop checking himself so he doesn't seem so timid. It's going to be a fun show.

It's costing the taxpayer $609,000 per refugee per year to keep them in squalor, with hundreds of confirmed cases of abuse and neglect.
Or they could be housed in the community at around $35,000 per refugee, become productive members of society and live much greater quality of life.
We're talking around 2,200 people here, hardly a threat to society.

What Jaekus said. Australia's policies breach human rights, breach international law, unnecessarily costs taxpayers billions, and sees the abuse and trauma of thousands of people - all of whom are not convicted of a crime and most of whom can't even be said to have committed one. I don't get the big fuss on detention for refugees.
You can't just let them in, you don't know who they are.
You can't just put them all into society, they might disappear, we don't know who they are.
So what else are you gonna do other than keep them at a facility while you process them? So what if they have kids, its not a free pass. If they are coming from wartorn countries like you say, don't you think the fact that they aren't getting bombed or shot at or kidnapped or on a leaky boat 6 inches from the water that could drown them any night is an improvement?

If this country was like syria and I was desperate enough to get on an old boat and sneak into a country as a refugee I'd be over the moon to be locked up in a facility that I have water and food and a roof over my head and medical supplies. I don't care if its cold porridge 3 times a day and my mattress is so thin I can feel the ground. I'm not getting shot at or beheaded.

I'm not saying it's an easy situation with an easy solution but dumping them all on some hellish offshore prison camp can't be the best option. I don't think "at least it's better than getting shot or beheaded" is much of a defence for it either.

Well if that's the standard you're prepared to accept then that's your prerogative. Personally I think Australia can offer more than a disease-infested traumatic prison camp on an abandoned iron phosphate mining site on the most inhospitable spot on Nauru. And when the only reason they're there is because attacking each other on refugee arrivals has become a political sport in Australia it's a pretty miserable situation.

Other Eurpoean countries do essentially the same thing yet Spain, Italy and Greece get very little flack on the international media.
It's not looking good for a lot of refugees coming in, since the last few bad eggs like the Sydney Siege duder and the Kid trying to join ISIS were refugees.
