~1/4 the US murder rate, and its been achieved without capital punishment, not needing anyone to sit on their porch spitting tobacco and stroking shotguns, and despite most of the population being descended from criminals.
Remarkable.
We truly are a City Upon a Hill! Even dilbert is using the US as a comparison. It's true though, Australia has also accepted a future of Capitalism without conscience or consequence, the American example. When's the Great Barrier Reef set to be demolished?Dilbert_X wrote:

Campbell Newman got voted out as as Premier considering labour had only 7 seats out of the 45 needed in last government in QLD state.
So yeah, were doing a lot better on the reef issue now.

You don't need a reef. Australia is going to be a colony of China in 50 years anyway.
Because Abbott Point (lawl) is the largest coal dump site in Australia that is fucking up the reef and is operated by an Indian conglomerate.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

See you don't need to do this. It's a hugely flawed and expensive process. Community detention is so much more efficient and effective but no politician in Labor or the Coalition will argue it because it carries with it the incorrect perception of "opening up the gates" or "providing an incentive".Adams_BJ wrote:
But I spose when you need to buy warships and personnel and build facilities and staff them, and pay the country housing them as well. It isn't cheap.
Why is it a disgrace? Their parents are going there. They are getting fed and clothed and have a roof over their heads. No one is out to kill them. They aren't assigned to manual labour.Ty wrote:

There are better ways of doing things that don't see people face abuse and trauma, that aren't ridiculously expensive, and that aren't illegal under the Human Rights Convention and other international treaties Australia is party to. I'm not saying "community detention for all" either, security screening is perfectly reasonable. What I am saying is that throwing children in offshore prison camps as a first course of action is a fucking disgrace.

Most refugees who don't make it into Australia deal with shittier camps as well.Ty wrote:
I'm not saying it's an easy situation with an easy solution but dumping them all on some hellish offshore prison camp can't be the best option. I don't think "at least it's better than getting shot or beheaded" is much of a defence for it either.
