I suppose... There isn't really a "cop shootings" thread. There's the one specific to the NYC ones that came about when that dude ran up on those two cops that weren't doing anything, but not really a furgeson + 'I can't breathe' thread.

You should be able to criticize anything without having to fear violence. But you can criticize stuff without having to be offensive and blatantly rude. Reprinting those cartoons in response to this is not the apex of freedom of speech. It is a stupid escalation. No one has ever been murdered over a New York Times op-ed.

i don't think you understand how sacrosanct the original liberal values of enlightenment europe are in france.

france and its citizens identify so strongly with the core, classical tenets of liberal humanism that it makes america look like a bastard child. people identify with this 'frenchness' and its inalienable rights more than they identify with any racial or religious sub-group (whereas in america, one tends to construct identities precisely around race, or religious sub-groups, and politicise the struggle between such interests).

the freedom of speech and freedom of the press in france is pretty huge. an american wouldn't understand this for many reasons, not least of all because the 'freedom' of the media in america is a meretricious illusion at best, and a corporate sham at worst. you pay lip service to such ideals but you never test the principle. france's media here actively test the principle. what is an active and vigorous democracy if it never challenges myth or rises to the fear of violence? it enters a period of stasis and decline - the sort of milquetoast 'liberal' apologias and hand-wringing that you find in the more denuded western nations.

america could learn a lot from france when it comes to real secularism, real separation of religion from public life, and real demonstration of classical enlightenment liberalism. france isn't perfect, and some of the cartoons were dumb, yes, but expression should never be met with violence. whether or not the comics had 'artistic merit' is irrelevant; and their political merit is pretty self-evident. all forms of power should be constantly ridiculed and satirised in a well functioning democracy. every sort of elite and authority should be held to account and made to laugh at itself. why does it need to be subtle or sophist to impress you?
