well then obviously, going off your sound logical methods they should be allowed.  We as a society should be reactive, not proactive.  Let someone get punted in their face until their neck snaps, THEN outlaw them.

That card this weekend was pretty shit.  Next PPV should be though

It doesn't make sense to have Faber on Fox Sports 1. I have Machida by decision.

Gus out, Cormier in against Jones on Sep 27th!

In other news, Nick Diaz signed a new contract today too!  Good stuff

I wanted this fight more than the Gus rematch. This will probably be Jones best opponent. My prediction, which has obviously been wrong before, is DC will gas in the later rounds and will lose the fight.

Wow MacB, that's a bold prediction.  Haha I want DC to win.  Hard to bet against Jones though man.

I started MMA late and missed Fedor and Anderson's runs. I want to see another GOAT challenger be built up. I hope to one day say I watched Jones from the beginning.

There's so much more talent these days. I wonder if there is going to be another star like that.  Fedor is my favorite fighter of all time, but I'd be remiss to not acknowledge he did fight some tomato cans in his day.  Nothing on par with how boxing always has inflated fighters and records, but he didn't fight the level of talent that today's fighters have to face

DC shouldn't have pushed Jones. The fight was all his fault.

anyone watch those fights last night?  Hunto sent Roy down like Bald Bull.

Can't help but cheer for Akiyama.  His walkout music is the best ever.  Wish the UFC had the spectacle of the old JMMA promotions - something like this is fantastic

The UFC's promos are pretty boring in general. After their experience with Tito, Shamrock, Randy and others, they don't like to promote their fighters too much in their events. I think Bellator's pre-fight promos are the best. They can sometimes be over the top but he they do a good job getting you invested in the fight.

Speaking of Bellator, Did you watch the event last night? Bellator fighters aren't the best but they always put on good shows.

that's not a promo, that's his walkout.   I was speaking more to the show itself.  UFC does a decent job with production, but old DREAM and PRIDE had a scale that was just insane.  From the lighting to the angles to the stadiums.  Even the fans were crazy.  I remember watching a lot of Pride fights where the crowd is completely silent until some change of position and then they just cheer.  It was just...different.  Just more energy in general

I know that was a walkout. I wasn't disagreeing. I was adding to your point.

After the NSAC fined Jones and forced him to do community service, do you still think they aren't overreaching? Japanese events were better and they didn't have commissions like the NSAC. I agree that doing things like making sure fighters get paid is great. But they don't have to be the MMA police.

i guess he lost his nike sponsorship too.

Do i think they are overreaching? No.  The fact Jones lost his sponsorship goes to show that if the sport in general wants to be more mainstream (read: attract big corporate sponsors) they need to shed a little bit of the violent image.  Don't discount the safety aspect the commissions play in all this too.

Some Japanese events were better.  They also had no doping policy (specifically written into contracts that they wouldn't test for PEDs), put on freakshows, had fixed fights, and consistently changed opponents at the last second, fucking with people to put more of an advantage on fighters they wanted to promote.

Wanting to shed its violent image has to be the dumbest excuses for anything related to MMA. MMA can't shed its violent image. It is inherently a violent blood sport. You can't hope to sanitize it if fighters come out looking like this in the end.

The UFC will not get any bigger. There is no where else to go after the Fox deal. The numbers aren't that great for the fox cards and their PPVs are declining due to saturation. They aren't making big stars anymore and fans couldn't care any less about the fire extinguisher weight classes.

For all the faults of the Japanese organizations, they at least had the right idea of making it about entrainment first. Putting on a good show is always secondary to "getting legitimacy". The people who are turned off to combat sports can never be won over. Visuals like this will never leave their minds.

You can put all the rules you want, you can get all the sponsors, but people won't get over that hump.

Finally, Jones didn't lose his Nike sponsorship because of the fight. It had zero mainstream attention and everyone in the MMA community got hyped for the fight. If Hope Solo can keep her Nike sponsorship after getting domestic violence charges, a MMA fighter can't lose it for being violent in a company sponsored event. They probably just used it as an excuse because like I said before there isn't the audience or fan base to sell a line of Nike product with a MMA fighter on it.

Shed SOME of it's violent image.  People shoving each other in a press conference is different than people fighting in a ring or cage.  Showing that the violence is contained to sanctioned conditions with rules and regulation as opposed to fighting at a press conference goes far when trying to promote something that is still seen in some of North America (Canada) and Europe (Germany) as brutal will help.  You have to understand both the idea of shedding SOME of its violent image (as opposed to shedding it completely - after all it is a fight sport) and the separation of what happens inside and outside of the cage.

I won't pretend to know how business is going at Zuffa HQ because I'm not privy to their financial details.  The FOX deal was something like $100MM/year - do you know what the larger sports leagues receive in TV money?  It's a lot more than $100MM/year - hell, Microsoft pays the NFL that per year just to promote the surface tablet!  It's a little premature to say there's nowhere to go but down.  It's funny to read your words because you're literally parroting what people have been saying about MMA and the UFC in particular for years.  I don't disagree with your sentiment regarding saturation and building of stars - I've whined about the same thing, some in this very thread.  But I don't have the naivety to think the sport is not increasing - maybe look at a more global view than just the US market.  They are striking television and PPV deals in other countries, classicaly focusing on the BRIC market because that's seen as more or less the low-hanging fruit.

You're right - that was the one thing Japanese MMA promotions were ALWAYS going for - excitement.  But there's a give and take here.  I like the idea of fighting as sport more than as entertainment.  I like competition.  I like seeing strategy played out.  Sure, seeing an overmatched dude get knocked out spectacularly is exciting, but from a sporting sense, it doesn't do much for me.  It's akin to watching a high school football team play a professional team.  Sure it's exciting to see a one-sided wooping from time to time. In my opinion, putting on a fight that is as close to even is more important than putting on an entertaining fight, but both should definitely be factors in matchmaking.

There are rational people in the world, and alleviating their concerns about the brutality of the sport through demonstrating there are safety measures and doctor's opinions and other regulations in effect goes a long way in achieving legitimacy.  I'm sure you're aware of the outlawing and PPV ban the UFC faced pre-Unified Rules, and Jon McCain's efforts to outlaw it because he saw it as little more than "human cockfighting." He's since gone on record saying he's a fan and has ordered PPVs.

Regarding Jones' sponsorship, his lawyer said he lost the sponsorship as a result of the presser incident.  I'd like to think whoever negotiated the contract didn't allow for it to be terminated because "there isn't an audience" according to Frankie from Bayonne.  But sure, it could just be an excuse or plea for leniency.

So Cain is injured (again) and now Mark Hunto is fighting against Werdum for the title.  I think it's awesome, but I also think Hunto only has a puncher's chance to actually win the fight.  Werdum's a high-level BJJ player...

Turned out to be a great fight. I am very impressed by Mendes. I don't know what they are going to do with him now that he has lost twice to Aldo. Like Junior Dos Santos, he is a head above everyone else in his division but still a foot shorter than the champ.

I feel the same way about Werdum vs Hunt. After getting title where do you think this will put Werdum in all time HW rankings? My rankings are 1. Fedor, 2. Randy, 3. Big Nog, 4. Bartnett? or Cro Cop 5. Werdum? He doesn't have long streaks but has a ton of wins against top opponents in their prime. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabr%C3%AD … rts_record

I really do not like Conner McGregor. I can't stand his personality. I don't think he can beat any of the top 5 FWs. They are feeding him weak opponents and shielding him from wrestlers. I don't think he has a lot of heart either. I honestly see Diego Sanchez winning a fight between the two. No one has ever pressured Conner or pushed the pace vs him. Reminds me of JDS back when he was champ. Everyone thought he was unbeatable until Cain stood right in front of him and pushed forward. JDS can't handle pressure like that and Conner will probably wilt if someone pushed him like that. Diego could do it. What do you think?

1. Fedor
2. Everyone else

(seriously though)

Big Nog is somewhere in there.  Couture is in there.  Barnett....hmm. I'd feel more comfortable putting Mark Coleman in there.  I don't know if Cro Cop makes it.  Werdum definitely does not make it in there yet.  JDS makes it in there before Werdum.

I like the fact McGregor talks shit and then backs it up.  Sure, they are kinda sorta feeding him a can in the form of Siver, but he beat Poirer and Poirer is a legit top talented guy.  I'd like to see McGregor face Frankie or Cub but it's probably not going to happen.  Let him face Aldo next - if he wins, he will fight those guys anyway.

To Conner's credit, he made the FW division really interesting to follow for me. I want to see someone come along who can beat him. I believe it's called the Mayweather effect. Dennis Berm is out and if Frankie wins against Cub, I don't want to see him rematch Aldo. So yeah give it to CM if Cub loses. This is all assumes something weird doesn't happen in the Siver fight.

Hunt did a lot better than I thought he would. I think Werdum was playing hurt whenever he dropped though. He did have a busted lip by the end of the first FWIW. The stoppage may have been a bit early. He wasn't intelligently defending himself and was making no effort to stand up but he was still very lucid.
