hey guys,

i was just playing a game on steam and listening to some music when my screen froze and all the sound stopped

it went right to a bsod and at the bottom it said

dumping physical memory......

the bsod stayed there for 20 or 30 min and then i did a hard boot by holding the power button in

now when i try to start up the system it turns on but the mobo doesnt post and the monitor scans for an input device but doesnt find one then the monitor goes to sleep

any idea what caused this or how to fix it

please tell me my mobo didnt die and maybe its just my graphics card

my system specs are

mobo = asus nvidia 650 sli p5N e sli
graphics = 9800 nvidia gt
cpu = intel dual core 2.33

ok i tried switching my graphics cards

tried removing one ram stick, then the other

tried unplugging everything, all usb devices etc

i cleared the cmos by removing the cmos battery

when i turn the system on the mobo does not post
the monitor doesnt even detect that its plugged into a source and goes to sleep

the keyboard and mouse usually flash and change colors according to personal settings
when i turn the system on but now they just stay one color and dont respond to anything

anyone have any ideas or do you guys think the mobo is dead ?

thanks again for any info

When you removed the battery did you unplug the power cable and hold the power button in for about 20 secs?

do you have a buzzer in that system? a small speaker that goes "beep" during the post? if you do, after you clear cmos, disconnect everything, remove memory modules, leave only the cpu and power in and turn the system on. it should go "beep-beep-beep" on you, which indicates that there's no memory installed. if it doesn't either your cpu or motherboard is dead. if it does, the problem may be with the psu.

also, check that motherboard for leaky capacitors, this is how they look:

https://www.thegeekpub.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/leaky-capacitor-300x214.jpg

bulging on the top, usually traces of leaking electrolytic solution can be seen on the cap. if you find any capacitors looking like that, your motherboard is dead.

coke i will try that next and then i will try what shahter said

shahter yes i have a buzzer in the mobo that beeps when it posts
should i remove the graphics card and hard drive also ?

why would my mobo do this all of a sudden ?
could a hacker of done this because I got threatened by a former friend who is a hacker right before this happened

thanks again

ok i tried both of those things you guys said i even removed the heat sink and had a close look with a flash light but i didnt see any leaking capacitors or anything that looked "fried"

now i need to know how to figure out if its the CPU or the MOBO that needs to be replaced

how do i tell which one is the problem ?

thanks again guys for all the info

ok maybe this is wishful thinking but after reading up on my issues i think i may just need a psu

what do you guys think the chances are that the psu is problem here ?

Quite a high chance actually.
The line current side of the transformer needs to handle 115V or 230V and the respective temperatures.
The latter wears down capacitors and soldering points a lot.

My PSU fried recently after 9 years of service and several new system builds.
I have a silly up-side-down case, where the PSU sits at the bottom and the fan sucks in dust from below like a vacuum cleaner...

The obvious check is to see if the fan in your PSU is spinning.
If it's not, something definitely is wrong.

If it is, that still doesn't mean your mainboard gets power.
Get a multimeter and check all the powered pins on the 24-pin ATX connector.

globefish23,

thank you for your reply, it has given me hope

The psu seems to be fine and the little green led on the bottom of the mobo it lit up
so im worried its the mobo or the cpu, if the psu wasnt doing its job fully would the mobo light be on ?

yes, you remove everything, only leaving cpu and cpu cooler in. them you power it up. cooler fan should spin and you should hear buzzer giving you "no memory" signal - if it doesn't happen, your motherboard is most likely dead, but you should still try to find another psu and check with that.

as to how to check if it's cpu or motherboard - honestly, this system of yours is kinda old i recon. i wouldn't bother fixing it, especially if it's cpu or motherboard that are giving you these problems. maybe it's time to upgrade, you know.

Another idea that came to my mind:
Does your northbridge chip have a fan on it?
It's a small chip somewhere near the CPU and RAM, with a ~40mm fan or heatsink.

The same goes for the southbridge, which is nearer to the PCI interfaces, but normally doesn't get that hot and will probably only have a heatsink or nothing at all.

I once had a motherboard where that 40mm, high RPM fan died and suddenly everything failed.
I replaced it with a small heatsink and everything was back to normal.

Shahter wrote:

True.
The thing is, mainboard and CPU are pretty much tied by the socket they're using.
That would mean buying a replacement for either would cost you the same (or even more) than a much more powerful, newer model.
But then you'd also replace the other.
As for RAM, you can most likely re-use that on a new mainboard/CPU, but then you're probably bottle-necking that system heavily.

ASUS P5N-E SLI

it seems prototype has a very old configuration with ddr2 and all that jazz. it's time to replace all that pre-historic stuff with something current i think.

I dont have a heatsink or fan on my north or south bridge, only heat sink is on the cpu which i removed and inspected the cpu, it looks fine

I know my system is old, I built it back in 2007 but it suits me just fine so if i can fix it for cheap then thats what i want to do

I tried removing everything from the mobo except the cpu and heat sink  but i didnt remove the ide cables for the optical drives
would that matter ?

thanks again guys for all the info

and? did you try to switch it on while everything is removed? does the cpu fan spin? does the buzzer beep?

the cpu fan spins but i didnt get any beep but i did forget to remove the ide cables and the hdd cables
dont know if those matter or not

cables do not matter if there's no actual devices attached.

it looks like the motherboard has given up the ghost to me. check with another psu if you can though.

definitely. assuming it's the right card. got a model so I can make sure? (or if you know it's a PCIx 16).

Oh that card will do just fine in that mobo (or the one you wanted)
