Spoke too soon about the new drivers working well, they still do the same shit if you've been playing a particularly demanding game.  I guess they just won't work right until I either get a new card or a new computer altogether

So Acronis warned my that my HDD health was at 99% a few months back, and I felt my computer was a bit laggy, and attributed it to this, so I grabbed a spare 100% health drive from work that wasn't needed, slapped Windows on it and have been using it since.

The thought never crossed my mind that I was replacing a Samsung Spinpoint F1 with a Hitachi 5400RPM 2.5" laptop drive..

Anyone have an idea how to remove malware DOSEARCHES.COM. I searched but most listed solutions involved downloading other programs. It has Hijacked my browsers. The lady still doesn't understand that she can't download everything that pops up. Thanks guys.

The wireless router was across the apartment and I wasn't getting great speeds so I bought new one and set up DD-WRT. I thought I was going to just repeat the signal and take it off that but then I realized, why not just plug in directly to the repeater.

I give you the difference:

(first is no 2nd router, second is putting the repeater next to my computer and just using that wireless signal, third is putting the repeater next to my computer and hard-wiring into it instead)

Alright, time to buy a new laptop and I have good success with Tech Advice from you guys so I was wondering if you guys had any input.  I want a reasonably powerful system so I don't have to worry about it being way underpowered in 2-3 years.  The ability to run Solidworks/CAD is also desirable and I would like to be able to play BF3/BF4/others but nothing too crazy on at least modest settings.

A couple of the laptops I am looking at are
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6834313584

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6834231115

A few concerns/questions:
1. What are the good brands nowadays? My dell from 5 years ago has lasted me till now and the only thing I had to replace on it was the keyboard, but I don't really like their design/value right now.
2. Windows 8, I have heard it's not so good, how much of a concern is it? Also how much does a touchscreen improve the Windows 8 experience?
3. notebookcheck told me that the Turbo Boost doesn't work very well on the Lenovo Y510p that I am looking at. How much of an impact on the day to day performance would that have?

As always, I shall be liberally karmaing all those who help.

1. ASUS and Lenovo are pretty much the go-to brands these days. There are some decent individual laptops from other companies, but on a whole ASUS and Lenovo is where it's at.

2. Windows 8 is fine once you install start8 or startisback on it. Once you install one of those it feels pretty much just like Windows 7 but a bit snappier with a few little changes. Not worth using a touchscreen unless you're buying a small ultrabook/transformer type thing, if you're using a big powerful laptop/gaming laptop then startisback + mouse is much better.

I haven't really looked into that laptop much, but I don't know if I'd go down the SLI route (especially in a laptop). Anyone I know with SLI laptops have run into driver issues, and then you've got the normal heat, scaling and possible stuttering issues that come along with any dual GPU solution. If you want good gaming performance I'd look for one with a better single GPU solution, rather than going SLI.

That's my opinion anyway.

putting a server together, in pieces.
i had a q6600, so i bought a mobo.
i had a radeon 5850 black edition, so i segregated it to the pci express slot.
i had 4x2gb ram, ddr 800 which the mobo took. (and liked it)
i dropped an SSD into this PC, which freed up a 600gb velociraptor.
i got a key for win server 2012, which freed up a win 7 ult key that was on the HDD.
i got a NAS, which freed up ten terabytes that i had stuffed in various pc's around the house.

all i need is this lamp! and this ashtray! and this shinola tin, that's all i need!

[edit; this build is only a year behind shedule. i should've put this shit together a year ago. i'm not good a shedule's, fuck that - running yesterday's software on yesterday's hardware is so cash]

Quite the opposite, show me a dell with what I want in terms of performance in my price range (Around 1000, probably not more than 1100) and I will buy it in a heartbeat

Yeah if you want the same shape go with the G400s. I had tonnes of problems with my G500 (after I loved my G5) and both the G500/G500s have shitty degraded laser sensors with acceleration you can't turn off. The G400s isn't the best mouse out there, but if you like that shape then it's definitely a better option than the G500/s

Dang we could have used you about a year ago. We moved all our VM's to HyperV and it was such a hassle we ended up just rebuilding most of them from scratch.

Does does the G400s have the extra acceleration like the G500 does?  I was thinking about getting a G500 but I hear so much about the acceleration you can't turn off as well as certain longevity issues.  Maybe the G400s is the way to go next time?

The G400s has some jitter/acceleration issues, but no where near as bad as the G500s. The only properly flawless sensors you can find in a gaming mouse these days are probably Zowie mice (there are a couple Steelseries ones that aren't too bad), but their shape and deliberate lack of "features" won't suit everyone.

Which mice (that you know of) have a firmer wheel? I absolutely loathe the mouse wheels that can be pushed with the slightest gust of wind, especially since I OFTEN use my mouse wheel button for both normal use, and gaming.

The only mice I know of that have a firm/clicky scrollwheels are the Zowie mice (FK/EC1 evo/AM depending what shape you like) and the Razer Deathadder. Some people find them too stiff though, but they're the only mice I can think of that have very firm wheels. There are possibly more out there but I haven't used them personally.
