Steam have officially announced their own Linux-based SteamOS and hardware to play in the living room.

They're giving out 300 prototypes for free in a hardware beta this year.
To participate, you'll need to fill in a form and do some basic tasks and get this badge:

I'm a pc fanboi so i'm on Steams side here... but i think it's hilarious they're combating the console market by producing a small computer, used solely for gaming, left in the living room, connected to you TV.

I don't see it as "combating", rather trying to attract console gamers to the steam service, the same way the attempt was made with Playstation, to make more money off digital sales.

I do like the streaming capabilities of SteamOS, where you can stream games from your desktop computer to the Steam Machine in the living room.
For that you'd probably only need a very low-spec box, or build one yourself from old parts.
