if you'd asked me for $5000 before bf2's release i would have said 'no'. who the fuck forwards $5k towards a game? jesus i remember the days when people would complain about a game having a retail price of £50. crowd-sourcing is a web2.0 gimmick that lets shit projects get off the ground that would never find expert/industry investment, or else rips off people's good faith to fund shit that should be kept business-side.

again i look forward to this thread blooming
You sadist.

I agree that it's ludicrous for someone to spend $5000, (and much more,) to fund a game concept but I disagree that just because something didn't find industry investment it is a waste of time. Crowdsourcing is a mixed bag so far, and it should be remembered that it is still in early days. On one hand it does give a chance to very poor projects. Look at Steam Greenlight and the sort of shit that gets okay'd for sale because a few people liked the general idea. Most of them turn out to be broken messes which just adds to the clutter. But on the other hand I do think there are some genuinely good ideas that deserve a chance. Crowdsourcing is essentially investment by another more accessible means anyway, if someone's pitch is good enough to get people interested enough to part with their money then good for them.

I think community-backed projects are positive particularly in regard to things that industry and business have given up on. Star Citizen is a good example; it's a PC-focussed AAA space combat simulator. The industry isn't interested in that; they don't think there's a market for it, it poses a risk, and it's much safer to just churn out action-shooters. But I think it's been fairly well proven that consumers are interested and through their willingness to part with their money earlier in exchange for token rewards, (like shiny bronze cards,) will result in, hopefully, a good product that everyone can enjoy.

Or it'll crash and burn, whatever. You risk as much as you're comfortable with losing.

It sounds like a pay to win game, if the quality of your ship is based on how much $ you fork over.

If it acted like an investment and you would get gradually paid back as the game succeeded, I'd be more eager to contribute.

ty, my problem with projects that ask for sums in excess of a $1000 bucks (or even $100 bucks) is that the investment model depends on hype, PR, marketing, presentation, gullibility. i'm all for the theory of 'decentralized' investment, taking power for game development away from big investors and publishers, but really the crowd-sourcing thing is a very poor alternative. i'm sorry, but someone that debits $5000 from their bank account for a game they've never seen or played even in the remotest demo-stage is a fucking idiot. you wouldn't buy a car for that much money without going to see it or sit behind the wheel. you wouldn't pay rent for a flat for that much money without checking the heating works and the bed is comfortable. people who pay these sums are basically having their good faith (gullibility in the pessimistic case of the game industry) extorted.

the projects that get off the ground are normally those that have slick campaigns and make all the right appeals to 'true pc gam0rz' and 'omg fuk tha console haterz' type rhetoric. they gain a groundswell on sites like reddit and it becomes a 'cool' thing to say you have donated to so-and-so. very seldom do they ever deliver. they put more effort into preliminary sketches and wild ideas than they do game design. the paper drawings for this game here look 1000x better than the stodgy in-game footage, which looks like an animation sequence you'd find on a PS2 era game. it feels like a ponzi scheme to me.

anyway i'm sure you'll get your monies worth

Better ship doesnt necessarily mean you will be better than lesser ships. This isnt wow where a level 10 will always beat a level 5 no matter what, dog fights will be decided mostly on the skill of the pilot and the way they have configured their ship

i preferred the WoW system though. everyone talks about 'skill' games but often that ends up being terrible design. linear MMO's with traditional fighting are still infinitely more satisfying than guild wars 2 with its 'gear doesn't matter! everyone is equal! all skill!' talk. you have to have reaaaaally compelling combat for things like levels/gear to 'not matter'. like it or not, that sort of thing is an important motivating carrot for people to want to continue playing (gear, loot, spoils).

the wow system defiantly is best for games that are like wow in terms of fighting, but the combat in SC is closer to bf2 than wow, first person dog fighting with some FPS here and there too, so for me it just seems right for the most skilled person to win the majority of the time rather than the best geared.

i don't think gear/level will 'not matter' it will just give people a slight advantage rather than being the be all and end all, the combat would still have to be compelling though as you said, lets hope it is

Combat in Star Citizen has been described as "Rock, Paper, Scissors". There's no "ultimate" build as something can always best something else through the shear amount of customisation available.

Star Citizen didn't need crowdfunding - Chris Roberts had investors planned, but wanted to see how much the community pledged so he could ask the investors for less money, therefore giving them little input into the outcome of the game.

they didn't need crowdfunding but they were happy to devise pre-launch deals where they take $5000 off people for a space-ship?

O K.

wonder what all you gomps would say if EA came up with an 'awsm' deal before bf4. "hey guys, we don't need your funding, but here's a russian tank that, for $2000, you can drive around in our exclusive armor DLC". and if they marketed it as a 'return to real pc gaming' (as this game does). would you cheer then? well then why are you cheering another company that 'don't need funding' but take advantage of gamers?

Damn this game looks pretty.  I forgot that I bought one of the basic packages a while ago (i think the $40 one) and therefore have access to it.  Can't wait to try it.

My computer is too old to run the hangar. It could probably choke out enough power to play it at some level but my 9800GTX+ video card isn't DX11 compatible so I'm out of luck. I wanted to have a look around my 300i, Aurora, and Hornet but the many Youtube videos suffice.

The Freelancer actually looks like the most complete ship at the moment. It's a pretty attractive ship too even though it looks like a dildo in profile. The cargo space is great and the living quarters seem quite cosy and neat for the dedicated explorer. The guns are awesome too. Plus the cargo bay door! It opens! And closes! Excitement!

Thought CIG's roll-out of the Voyager Direct store was a clusterfuck.

"Here's 5,000 credits so you can play around with and test the features. But we're pricing things well outside of this so basically all you can do is buy a poster or a lamp. But don't worry you can pay us money to give you more credits. But remember; it only for those who want a reason to pledge further, it's not a method for us to make money."

Talk about a mixed message.

Edit: Bugger it, bought a GPU to boost my machine today. A fairly inexpensive one, I hope it gives me at least another year out of this thing. Star Citizen Hangar seemed as good a reason to do it than anything Got to see my ships. I can run it as slow as fuck, performance improves a bit if you play it for a while. Despite the graphical glitches it is very impressive to see things so polished so soon.

You bought a new graphics card in order to be able to look at virtual ships that you spent a load of money on even though you couldn't run the game?

Ty, what are you playing at?

I have a five year old PC that's getting to be on its last legs but I don't want to buy a whole new machine at the moment - and certainly not for a virtual gallery of immobile spaceships. I would rather build a new PC when the game is released, when better components are cheaper, and when there is likely to be more of a need than a want. However my PC probably wasn't going to last the distance and buying an inexpensive but better graphics card now provides a bit of a boost to make this thing last at least another year. Now my aged PC is running better than ever, its life has been increased, I don't need to worry about any big upgrades right away, and I get to take part in this whole hanger dealie as things get added to it over the next few months. I felt it was a pretty solid move.

Anyway in 2008 I bought a whole new machine earlier than I otherwise would have to play Far Cry 2, I don't exactly have the best record when it comes to this stuff. I'm just thankful I only bought a damn card this time.

How much longer can I get in on this pledging thing? I'm getting a hard on for this game more than I have for any game in years. Infact I haven't been excited about a game in years.
