I fucking knew it. You gotta go get exposed to more stupidity. Things you've said in the past about the "average person" have been noticeably skewed upwards.

someone from liverpool, i.e. the north. scousers and geordies (liverpool and newcastle) are two places with very distinct northern accents (youtube them). it's more nearing scottish than a prim and proper southern englander, anyway.

Soldier of Rome by James Mace is quite good for some easy reading.

I can't finish Skagboys, it's just too fucking depressing.

I'm currently reading my second Ayn Rand book, The Fountainhead, and holy fucking balls is it shitty. My intention was to enter the Ayn Rand Institute Scholarship competition for Atlas Shrugged, so I figured I'd read at least a couple of the books.

Jay, what the fuck man, they're god awful. She repeats the same few sentiments and ideas at least 40 times within the first 300 pages. I'm almost certain the book could be 50 pages long and still lose nothing apart from the weight of the paper.

It's a decent story, but she does use a sledgehammer with her ideology, yeah. I liked Howard Roark the character more than the characters in Atlas Shrugged, personally.

a book that tries to bludgeon you with (any) ideology is not worth reading. keyword 'bludgeon'. that is not how you write good fiction. that's how you write a political tract or diatribe.

They are both pretty good stories at heart if you can get past the heavy-handedness. She went over the top with her hero worship of superman individualists in Atlas Shrugged though. No one does everything on their own. Whether it's ideas or love or whatever, we all get helped. There are some who do try harder and contribute more, and they should be thanked and admired, and for the most part they are. That should be enough.

I am not a fan of Orwell. It has more to do with the sort of people in America who name drop him though. Ron Paul revolutionaries etc.

It's not just Ron Paul nutters, it's the people who vaguely remember being made to read it in high school. "Orwellian" is the only word people know.

i really have no idea why so many americans feel the compulsion to read rand. she is deadweight in both philosophy and literature. she made it onto university campuses at the nadir of the 80's when objectivism was a handy philosophy-for-dummies for the upcoming yuppies. it is lightweight. not systematic or analytic enough to be a philosophy, and definitely has no artistic merit. but loads of americans keep mentioning her. rand got a free ride.

A few good book reviews, I guess. I never really look at an Ayn Rand book and think "WOW OBJECTIVISM!"

exactly. it was a convenient hack-philosophy for an era of unparalleled greed and corporatism. a neurotic life-philosophy set out by a woman with a bigger bag of neuroses than the bins out behind a freudian clinic. terrible, terrible philosophy. it's literally just ranting. there's no serious thought behind it. and her writing is wooden, dull. it's like being fed gruel in a gulag. people who read it are idiots. it's one of those books that caught-on and became a 'phenomenon' for faux-intellectuals to tote and be seen carrying on campuses. just like fucking 'zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance' was the big 'i'm into philosophy' text for pseudos the decade before it.

With usura hath no man a house of good stone
each block cut smooth and well fitting
that design might cover their face,
with usura
hath no man a painted paradise on his church wall
harpes et luz
or where virgin receiveth message
and halo projects from incision,
with usura
seeth no man Gonzaga his heirs and his concubines
no picture is made to endure nor to live with
but it is made to sell and sell quickly
with usura, sin against nature,
is thy bread ever more of stale rags
is thy bread dry as paper,
with no mountain wheat, no strong flour
with usura the line grows thick
with usura is no clear demarcation
and no man can find site for his dwelling.
Stonecutter is kept from his tone
weaver is kept from his loom
WITH USURA
wool comes not to market
sheep bringeth no gain with usura
Usura is a murrain, usura
blunteth the needle in the maid’s hand
and stoppeth the spinner’s cunning. Pietro Lombardo
came not by usura
Duccio came not by usura
nor Pier della Francesca; Zuan Bellin’ not by usura
nor was ‘La Calunnia’ painted.
Came not by usura Angelico; came not Ambrogio Praedis,
Came no church of cut stone signed: Adamo me fecit.
Not by usura St. Trophime
Not by usura Saint Hilaire,
Usura rusteth the chisel
It rusteth the craft and the craftsman
It gnaweth the thread in the loom
None learneth to weave gold in her pattern;
Azure hath a canker by usura; cramoisi is unbroidered
Emerald findeth no Memling
Usura slayeth the child in the womb
It stayeth the young man’s courting
It hath brought palsey to bed, lyeth
between the young bride and her bridegroom
                               CONTRA NATURAM
They have brought whores for Eleusis
Corpses are set to banquet
at behest of usura.
