Also because you can make proportionately much more money with ivory and rhino horn.

There have happened a lot of burglaries in natural history museums, where rhino horn and ivory was stolen.
Also, one case where someone was robbed when coming home after he bought some tusks/horn in an auction.

Stupid, superstitious Asians with their silly traditional medicine of grinding animals into powder.

does that police officer number mean much, though? the US has 256 officers per 100,000, but how many shoot and kill citizens? how many people report harassment or discrimination? these seem more meaningful statistics to extrapolate. the number doesn't really mean anything. for e.g. the UK has a comparatively low number of police-per-citizen, and our police assume a 'neighbourhood bobby' kind of community role... but then again our urban areas have quite a lot of surveillance. obviously makes up for the man-power in other areas. the number alone seems kind of pointless.

Egypt cuts off diplomatic ties with Syria and reaches a deal with Ethopia in the same week. Morsi was just threatening to attack Ethopia a week ago.

The Taliban is opening a political office in Qatar. I will visit if I ever get a chance to go there.

https://blog.foreignpolicy.com/files/ajscreenshot.png The graphic above is a screenshot of a real, live poll conducted on Al Jazeera Arabic. It asks readers to give their opinion on who is responsible for turning the Syrian revolution into a sectarian conflict. And it offers two choices: Sunnis or Shiites.

In what may be an indication of the audience of Al Jazeera, which has been accused of favoring the predominantly Sunni opposition against Bashar al-Assad, an overwhelming 95.7 percent of readers as of this morning said the Shiites were to blame.

The poll itself, of course, is a painfully ham-handed effort -- the assumption that either the Shiite or Sunni communities as a whole are responsible for the gruesome turn of events itself endorses a sectarian view of the conflict. But it also suggests a broader, sadder truth: While Syrians may not have harbored religious hatreds two years ago, they are increasingly being forced to choose sides in a sectarian conflict.

As the radicalization of both sides continues, it's not just Al Jazeera readers who are being asked to look at the Syrian revolt as a struggle between rival faiths -- regular Syrians are being forced to think this way as well. It's a view that boils the war down to a simple choice: Who do you hate, the Sunnis or the Shiites? Check a box.
Stay classy Al-Jazeera Arabic.

Two men have been charged in the Albany, New York, area in a bizarre plan to use a device loosely described as a ray gun to "target people they didn't like," a federal law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation said Wednesday.

Glendon Scott Crawford, 49, and Eric J. Feight, 54, were arrested Tuesday after an undercover operation by the Albany FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. They were charged with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists.

The suspects intended to use the device to harm and kill enemies of Israel, a Department of Justice news release said. If convicted, each faces up to 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and five years of supervised release.

IIRC Making an X-Ray weapon is pretty easy, the average CRT will do the job - and why they needed leaded glass.
Militarily they're useless, unless you can convince the target to sit still for a couple of days, but for other purposes, such as ridding the world of non-jewish untermensch without their knowledge they could be effective.
