does a lot of it have to do with the fact they're resenting communism? ive read somewhere lots of russian prisoners would have nazi style tattoos just to say "fuck you" to the russian government.

no, it's to do with nationalism and immigration, mostly. vast swathes of russia is still a peasant shithole with no work, and what generally tends to happen to working-class people with no work is they cling to nationalist ideology and 'it's the foreigners' fault'. russia actually has more racially motivated crimes/murders than anywhere in europe, afaik. and huge gangs of skinheads. fascism will be found wherever there is poverty and lack of opportunity. for most russian people who live out in the countryside, away from the metro hubs, the only thing they have to do is drink vodka til oblivion. i guess you could blame those economic structural problems on communism, in an analytical kind of way... but fascists in russia mostly exist because they hate outsiders.

Do people assume you can't speak English when you travel? That is something I hear Asians have to deal with.

You are just upset that the people that were so nice to you in Oklahoma really thought you were a foreigner in an exchange student program. Guess what? They certainly looked at you and expected to hear an accent. They weren't expecting an American one. I am sure you cleared up the whole misunderstanding by telling them your father is German though so I guess it all worked out.
