France should ask for the statue of liberty back.

Can you imagine the outrage?

france is arguably still at the vanguard of culture, especially high-intellectual culture and high-arts, but that evidently means very little in a world led by the pragmatic and philistine yanks. it's that fundamental difference that leads to french snobbery over american people.

I recall an interesting article we had to read in my history course about an actual legal battle over Coca-Cola being produced in France. It's not something I would have even thought would have been a problem, but again, it's interesting how people view things.

I'm placated enough with "it's different" in that sort of argument. I'm not in a position to say one countrys way of doing things is inherently better. What I do know is that the French and Americans would get along swimmingly with their ideas of exceptionalism. A guy I know who's quite intelligent shocked me recently by making the claim the the US is the best country of the world, whereas in my mind I was questioning "Seriously? By what metric?" Then I just think back to my Cold War Europe history course I took and France with DeGaulle at the helm trying to be the leader for Europe and dismissing the US/UK.

The French wrote the book on food, literally. Yes, there are other cuisines, but basically every culture that has come into contact with French cooking has been heavily influenced by it because it is so good. Everything from meat prep to sauces to wine pairings, they've perfected. Most chefs in America are trained in the French style as well, so if you've ever eaten in a good quality restaurant, the chef that wrote the menu was undoubtedly influenced by French cuisine. I really can't stress enough how much influence they have in the world of food.

When the Russians showed the French eating courses rather than banquet style, the French adopted it and passed onto England.

Russia had a huge influence on the western world in that regard.

actually most french haute cuisine came from the southern med and crossed over the alps from northern italy. if you really want to trace your history of fine cooking. but okay, yeah, you know best.

Italian food is far better than French, French food I mostly find revolting.

So anyway, seems Gonski is dead then?

The French just had the first celebrity chefs like Escoffier and invented the restaurant experience.

as i said earlier, i think france has managed to settle with a certain sort of cultural-elite perception, in the wake of reneging actual political-imperial power. they've settled with exporting a version of 'high-class' culture - from academia all the way down to popular speech clichés - that inherently reinforces the idea that the french 'brand' means quality (and the other side of that coin: snootiness).

Gonski will probably happen in all the south-eastern states (no one expected anything to happen today). Not sure about Queensland and WA but, then again, Queensland and WA.

So... Tony Abbott's Director of Policy Mark Roberts threatened to 'cut the throat' of the CEO of the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. What's up with that?

More accurately he said he'd cut the throat of funding to the foundation when "we" are in power. Abbott denied it, then said Roberts was receiving counselling and apologised, now he's demoted him.

The potential Tony Abbott Government ladies and gentlemen.

No, Labor bear the responsibility for someone like Abbott having a chance at being PM.

The he's almost certainly going to be the next PM - despite being a dunce and a prick - is down to Labor's utter incompetence and perpetual infighting.
If Labor had even some semi-competence the coalition would have had to find someone better.

Right now the coalition could win if the leader were an actual muppet with John Howard's arm up its bum.
That they will reflects very badly on Labor.

that's the same sort of partisan mirroring and rhetorical finagling that we get over here in the UK political system. it never read made much sense to me, as a form of excuse-making. the "it's tony blair/gordon brown's fault that the tory's are being so bad" line of argumentation. always blaming it on the unanswerable previous incumbents. it betrays a weird sort of fatalism in politics.
