We actually helped the US quite a bit in the development of nuclear weapons.

There were even joint tests of the coast of WA.

If we want high speed rail, we need to a migration intake of about 350,000 a year for the next 20 years to make it economic.Sounds OK to me!

Coalition to bring in the drones against asylum boats
Unmanned aerial drone surveillance will form part of a Coalition government's measures to halt the flow of asylum seeker boats, defence spokesman Senator David Johnston has said.

He also suggested officers on Customs and Navy boats in remote international waters would be given the job of deciding whether asylum seekers were genuine.

Senator Johnston said on Thursday that the opposition would spend $1.5 billion on seven drones and aim to have them patrolling Australia's waters and international waters within four to five years.
Yeah, I can't see any problems arising from this. And it's such an efficient use of taxpayer's money

/sarcasm
Unmanned drones should be cheaper to operate than P3 Orions, and drones are planned to be an integral part of Australias defence system.
They'll be up there anyway, might as well use them to keep track of illegal migrants.

Saying we'll have them to repel the asian hordes is an Abbott gimmick though.

I don't live in Manly, but if I wanted to go there... 25 mins by car or 1.5hours by our 'great' public transport at peak times, could be double or more late at night/early morning. Going to work 5-15mins by car depending on traffic, 40-50 by public transport.

The ONLY time public transport is a preferable option is going to the CBD, during peak hours and when you have nothing big/heavy/bulky to carry. Getting my licence and car has literally saved me weeks in traveling time and given me the freedom to go anywhere I like when ever I like for probably less expense.

Fact is a majority of people don't live near train stations, and for those who do they're only good if your destination happens to be near another train station (preferably on the same line so you don't need to change trains).

I know I know. I was saying public transport is good enough if you're there for the weekend/on vacation.

Because drones are really doing to stop asylum seekers.

Were gonna get drones anyway. they're going to be an integral part of 21st century warfare. I doubt the gov is going to spend "billions" to stop asylum seekers. It's mostly for anti-drug smuggling and other border security ops. I can see catching asylum seekers would be practice for the navy.

Likewise we don't have a navy solely to catch illegal migrants - its peripheral and gives them something to do.

yeah it's entirely political, aimed at western sydney bogans.

meanwhile, the govt decides to bring the stupid by deciding to fund their (good!) education spending program with... tertiary education cuts.

boggles the mind sometimes.

The RAAF was already planning on replacing it's Orions with a mixture of new P8s and UAVs to fulfil maritime patrol requirements. This has been in the works for many years now the coalition is just saying "hey guys I swear this was our idea first".

It's natural to patrol our maritime areas, as cybargs said there are many other reasons to do so. This is just an easy headline for the coalition.

How about that?

So:

The govt will put more money into education move some money around

Teachers unions will demand a pay rise and soak it all up

Nothing will be achieved - except higher education will be poorer

I'm not sure really, there seems to be bundles of cash swilling around universities, and primary and secondary education for that matter.

So now every uni student need to fork at least 500 dollars up front. No more 10% (used to be 20%) discount on paying upfront. Great that just killed my incentive to pay upfront.

Labour just lost their base vote. Great job guys.

And fuck the coalition for pretending the whole drones thing was their idea. Yeah you came up with it all by yourself.

The Liberal Party: Forgetting that crime is a state issue and forgetting that they govern NSW. This either shows an incredible ignorance of Australia's constitutional arrangements, (kind of like Tony's pledge to refuse votes of sitting MPs,) or a lowest-of-the-low attempt to shove off their failing as Labor's fault.

Also, linking asylum seekers with crime rates? Really?

On this school funding reform thing - it's going to be another chance for Labor to completely balls up communicating a policy. I mean school funding is a good thing, the deal is solid even if the Liberal Premiers will piss and moan a lot, and the amount it is going to cost tertiary institutions is fairly minimal, (especially when you consider the amount of money the Labor Government has put into tertiary institutions during their term.) From what I've seen so far on their efforts selling it though? Labor will explain what they're doing, sure, but they'll do a poor job of promoting it. Meanwhile the non-tertiary teaching bodies will support it, the tertiary teaching bodies will voice their concerns, and the Coaliiton will launch some unrelated attack linking it with economic management or the carbon tax. Voters will be left confused and frustrated and blame the Government for it and Labor will see a further dip in the polls over a policy that in any other country would be lauded.
