You really don't know a thing about Australian culture do you?

australians, who hate british people and pommies, identifying themselves as british in order to racially discriminate against greeks? when british people natively have never had a racial hatred against greeks? sounds great. please tell me more.

And it's got nothing to do with racism, purely conservatism. 'They' (Being the new influx immigration) are different so we don't want them here. Give it a generation or 2 and they'll be assimilated into society and there will be a new immigrant to hate on.

lol why does 'possessiveness' = shortness of space? i meant it in terms of cultural identity and mono-culture/hegemony/homogeneity.

anyway it was a simple mistake: i only saw cybargs' post on the fly whilst scrolling through the 2-3 pages i missed overnight, looking mostly for your responses, dilbert. if he had nuanced his post and mentioned "australians" once, as in "british australians" rather than "brits and euros", then i wouldn't have wondered wtf he was talking about. the racism against greek immigrants in australia strikes me as a racism borne out of british immigrants having some small stake in their new identity as "australians". even if that is a particular brand of white-euro australian (convict pride? neat). i still wouldn't use the term "brits and euros" hating "greeks", because really by that stage they are settled "british australians" hating a new incoming load of greek migrants. again, it's just a little nuance.

Australian Asians are becoming quite anti-immigrant, as Cybargs pointed out, its hardly an exclusively British thing.

when whites first arrived in australia, they weren't the mainstream society. they didn't make a giant effort to integrate with the natives.

it's hardly unsurprising that incoming greeks adopted the same insular, diaspora mentality.

Incoming whites didn't want to assimilate with the natives, as was the case for the rest of the Empire.

Its a little different now, the Greeks aren't exactly landing in longboats, they're here for the jobs and the lifestyle. If they choose not to integrate they won't be liked, simple.
