don't know if you checked, but the sistine chapel is a fresco. a fresco is a type of painting. painting has always been a high-art. the comment above stated that pottery, woodwork and metalwork were crafts. could you at least make some sense before you assume such an absurdly cocky tone.
I fail to see the difference between a painting and a decorative vase. They're both decorative.

I was implying that craftsmen can create art via there medium.  Not just the default mediums.  Function not withstanding.

Doesn't make it much different from everything else on here then, does it?

This whole conversation just reminds me of the preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray (click here you lazy bastards)

Does anyone else find it amusing that uzi used to argue until he was blue in the face that his degree wasn't worthless and that he was going to have a good life, and now he's flipped it and he will argue until he's blue in the face that art is useless and he's not absurdly proud that he holds a degree in something useless?

I only really like distilled spirits mixed with fresh fruit juices in cocktails.

All those fermented alcoholic beverages (beer, wine,...) really suck.
Same way that mould cheese is an abomination.
I want my food and drinks fresh, not digested and fucked over by bacteria and fungi for months.
you do know that after you ingest said fresh food and drink it gets fucked over by bacteria and fungi of your digestive system for hours so that you can get anything out of it, right? fermented food like yogurt, cheese and pickled fish is actually very healthy and good nutritionally.
Yes, but stuff like wine just tastes awful compared the original grape juice.
Really, mixing grape juice with vodka or rum sounds like the better wine to me.

Having said that, I do like yogurt and most sorts of cheese, except for the really stinky ones and the moldy ones, where half of the mass is fungus.
I don't even want to think about fermented fish.
I know that it's popular in many countries along side strong liquor.

how is an academic degree held in high esteem for its difficulty made 'useless' because the art it concerns itself with is aesthetically autonomous and aspires to uselessness? i think you are severely misguided in your thinking. a degree and its worth to a job market / social prestige isn't directly related to the degree's content, you know. that may be a little mindblowing to you as a concept, being an engineer and all, who seems to have defined his entire life-identity out of the contents of his course.

and no, i never said "craftsmen can accidentally create art". i love how i linked a helpful resource to you all, with 3 easily digestible paragraphs detailing the issue very succinctly, and yet none of you read it. instead you want to jibe people in your philistine ignorance. bravo! you look really witty.

and yes jay, yes indeed. what's the difference between the cistine chapel and a vase? it's all decorative! i agree. art is nothing more than decoration. something to look at when you're bored. wallpaper borders and and an agreeable elvis portrait.

You shouldn't poo-poo our good friend the bacteria. They're responsible for many of the flavors we love in our food. Only a tiny percentage of microorganisms in food are pathogenic, the rest are either harmless or spoilage microorgs (it isn't gonna taste good, but it won't make you sick either). It's perfectly fine to tuck into some fungus as long as it isn't poisonous. People shouldn't be grossed out by this sort of thing.

btw guys, i know that none of you are really into 'the arts' or 'philosophy' or anything, and that's cool, it's not your bag, you've chosen to go into other things, but just a tip for the future: just because there are a few of you, who are all equally clueless and without knowledge on a subject, and just because you seem to share the same unfounded opinions and jocular jesting, that 'consensus' formed between you doesn't make you 'right', or more 'valid'. it's called 'ignorance'. large numbers of people feeling smug and self-assured about something they have no clue about. it doesn't really augur well for the rest of your credibility in 'debate and serious talk'. mods included. just sayin'.

please. go read the 3 paragraphs i linked you. it is extremely easy to understand. you guys seem to be stuck on a very simple distinction in aesthetics. i feel like i've repeated the point enough times for a class of 12 year olds to understand.

I don't think art is useless.
it depends in what sense you are using "useless". do i think art as a cultural expression is "useless"? NO! i think art is integral to human culture and civilization. but, in terms of aesthetics, what distinguishes 'fine art' or 'the work of art' from mere craft/invention, is the fact that an aesthetic idea and criterion comes before any semblance of a 'use' or 'value'. in that sense, all high-art aspires to be useless, i.e. it aspires to be itself and only itself, first and foremost, before it aspires to have a 'use' or a sale-value. this reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally is not complicated. as far as philosophy goes, this is about as fundamental and freshman as you can get.
