I understand freedom of expression. I like piercings. That is my thing. I see people around my age all the time with an arm tattoo and I don't get why they would get something so visible at such a young age. It can be job and social limiting. I don't think having four Zelda hearts is worth it in that case. I have one friend who got an arm tattoo and later had some regret about it since it meant he would have to wear long sleeve shirts the rest of life at the teaching jobs he was applying for.
I'm not sure how much longer that will be a concern to people applying for a job in teaching, considering the liberalization of certain aspects our culture and the fact that people are becoming more concerned with things like shootings and pedophile staff in schools than if Mr. Willard has a tattoo of an anchor on his left forearm.
i think it's gonna be a long time before parents - especially prissy parents of middle-class and privately-educated kids - are going to be happy with teachers sporting tattoos and 'radical' body-art. i think there's still a widespread perception that tattoos are for working-class people, or sailors. apart from its original, like, 1920's hey-day, when it was a 'cool' thing for aristocrats and swingers to get as a sign of rebellion, i think this generation is the first time in history that a wide proportion of people have started to get tattood. and even then, that's on the back of like completely stupid stoner/skater/rocker/internet-gaming culture. these people are hardly going to be the ones establishing new norms in the future.
At stupid as that subculture may be, at least it's something they're interested in and feel strongly about. I'm perplexed by how frequently I've met a girl who's gotten a "cute" tattoo for basically no reason at all. "Oh, it's a butterfly/bird" "Is that symbolic or anything?" "No, I just thought it looked pretty."
