Win7 Repair

I just replaced my motherboard on my computer and now it wont boot from my hdd anymore. When I start it up it goes to boot manager and says that so and so cant be read so repair using your windows install disc. So I put in my windows instal disc and it doesnt give me an option to repair it just goes to the install part after like 15 minutes of windows splash screen and if I back out of the install it just reboots.

It can see all my hdds when its booting so they are all plugged in but it just doesnt want to start. Is my windows installation disc bad? I dont know what the problem is.

Stupid question but is it set to boot from the correct hdd in bios?

Check the connections from mobo to hdd. Are you sure it asks you to use the install disc and not a repair disc? Are you sure you're using the correct disc?

Just saw your screenshot. Can't you spam key presses to load from disc, and then follow the prompt?

Was it an OEM version of windows 7?

I think they lock themselves to the motherboard

Mash the F8 key on startup until the Advanced Boot menu comes up. You should have the option to repair from there.

I didnt think there were two discs. I always thought there was only one disc and you could just choose like install and repair and all these options

I only have one disc and I dont have the box or anything else it came with

This too. I have the OEM version. Call up windows and ask them to unlock.

no it didnt even have that. It went to a blue splash for like 5 min then said "setup is starting" for another 5 min then just spit me out in the install part.

The only options that gave we was to start win 7 (which just brought me to the error screen) and run a memtest. no repair anywhere.

No it gave me the ToS and there was a progress bar at the bottom.

Also just mashing f8 wasnt even working so I hit delete right before the screen switched to the boot error message

I can get to this and i should be able to hit f8 to get to the advance boot options but it just puts me back at my original error message

you can download it legitimately from here:

then make a bootable usb and put it on that

that should have a repair option, not sure why your disc doesn't

that would trigger activation

If I was replacing a motherboard, I would do a fresh install ... you get away with not doing it sometimes if the chip sets are close.

I was using a bad disk. It repaired fine with the new disk

I have too much stuff to do a new install

This was caused by a change in your hard drive controller.

If you wish to do this in the future, get a Hirens Live CD and run the registry tool within it to reset Windows to a generic hard drive controller, thus able to boot again.

Install new Chipset drivers. Done.

Edit: Set your motherboard to IDE when booting the Hirens disc as it's based on XP, change back to ACHI when booting back to 7.

just noticed this thread,

fwiw, I tried the same thing, changing the MB (and ram) but keeping the hard drive and I ended up having to completely reinstall the OS. I never got it to work. Not saying it's impossible, just saying I was in the same boat as you and had to re do the whole thing.
Ended up buying a nice new 500GB drive so it was a clean start but yeah transferring all the files was a hassle.
