yes, i'm not putting down the genuine movement by the syrian people. it has been hijacked by a few countries in the ME and the west. now it's turned into alqaeda/islamist extremist vs the syrian gov't.Spearhead wrote:

very nice. it's funny how people call for support to the 'syrian rebels' without realizing that they might actually be worse than assad.
the first one claims he is 15 and the second one says he is 16.
Russian media - rebels are terrorists
lol
Surely youre aware enough to know that there are probably dozens of factions on the "rebel" side, right?
i really think thats what it was from the begining the very same assholes fighting the baath forces were the same assholes assad helped out in sending over to iraq to fight the occupation

its nothing more than sunni on shiite. the alawites are what, like 1% of the population?
Tu Stultus Es
12% but yeah, they don't constitute a large part of the population compared to the sunnis. these guys are coming from the gulf states and saudi arabia(sunni) to fight off assad. if you look at some of the rebel's videos you can tell the dialects are not of that area(levantine). they're southern arabian/gulf. the saudis, israelis and gulf states(with the exception of iraq) all want to see iran lose an ally so they will happily assist these guys.
where is feos when you need him? i want him to explain to me what the difference is between the al qaeda operatives were helping in syria and the ones we're fighting in mali.

i dont think feos would be in a position to share that info.
is that 12% exclusive to the alawi or shiites in general?

it's exclusive to the alawites. shiites make up 13% of the general population.
Can you explain why this is still a stalemate? I mean I know the government still has all the aircraft/tanks/etc. but what about the manpower? Is it really just 12 percent vs. 85 percent? If so they really are fucked. No win situation.
76% the rest are other

the global political scene will miss a figure like chavez. easily mocked in the west, but he represented an important counter-weight imo.

KansasThe Kansas state Senate on Thursday passed a bill to require applicants for welfare and unemployment benefits to undergo drug tests, as well as certain public officials.
The measure now heads to the Republican-controlled state House, where it is likely to pass in some form.
State Rep. J.R. Claeys (R-Salina) is excited about the bill -- at least the part that calls for testing people who seek government benefits.
"We need to put an end to the cycle of poverty with people on government assistance," Claeys told The Huffington Post. "Drug use is a big contributing factor in the continuing cycle of poverty."
The Kansas state legislature is charging ahead on a host of conservative policy prescriptions, including proposals to eliminate income taxes, roll back collective bargaining rights for public employees and restrict abortions.
Making poor people take drug tests has been a policy goal for Republicans across the country, despite a general lack of empirical evidence that drug abuse is a big problem among people receiving government benefits. But few states have actually followed through with testing schemes because there is little to suggest they save money, but a lot to suggest they can trigger a successful constitutional challenge.
Citing the Fourth Amendment's prohibition against unreasonable searches by the government -- the Supreme Court has long held that forcing people to pee in cups counts as searching them -- federal judges this week thwarted Florida's efforts to test welfare applicants. The law had already been put on hold after just a few months in 2011 by a lower court in response to a lawsuit by civil liberties advocates

you can't be disingenuous - from an economic point of view, chavez's conversion of the country's vast oil wealth into actual economic results and public wellbeing was... not-so-great. he was a kooky dictator with, well, the sort of idiosyncrasies that such a position of public eminence and power always seem to bring. but he at least represents, still, an idealist position on the left of the political compass. thesedays, with everyone falling into a bland-bureaucratic middle, or a conservative capitalism, it's refreshing to see countries still going it their own way, against international pressure. a socialist latin america is pretty much the best thing for them at this historical moment, and you've got to hand it to people like chavez for sticking it to 'the man', who would rather conveniently have the world state-of-affairs otherwise.

well now you guys can keep quiet when shahter talks about the western worldview and media being just as biased and ideologically filtered as any soviet/russian worldview, right? i mean, at least in the good spirit of pluralism/epistemological relativism.
20 un peacekeepers have been kidnapped by rebels in syria. they want the syrian gov't to remove it's army from the area.
