Probably.  Have you tried different USB ports and a different keyboard just to make sure?
Ya, tried all the ports, don't have a backup keyboard, but it works when plugged into my laptop.

why don't you get a PS2 adaptor or whatever they're called and plug your keyboard into the traditional keyboard/printer type input. that way you can probably deduce whether its your motherboard overall or just the USB controller.

I'm long overdue for a replacement desktop anyway.

Printer was a serial port, IIRC. Old keyboard were, as you said, PS2

I think the last thing I ever used serial for was the transfer cable for that Scan Command thing for a Jurassic Park game.

USB controller crapped out, keyboard failure etc. Motherboard toast?
Use one of those USB-to-PS/2 adapters and plug your keyboard in that way.
You could then get a cheap PCI USB controller card.

All this assuming that nothing more on the motherboard is fried.

I had single, damaged USB connectors several times, without affecting anything else.
(I think that cheap, powered USB hubs plugged in and running continuously were the culprits.)
