I have admin rights on my two machines and only need the IT guy when I want him to make room on the server for more MP3s.

Half my acquired social skills came from doing IT work for three years in high school, he's probably just a n00b at doing both things

My PC crashes whenever I pull out or plug in something to my soundcard (Asus Xonar DG).

Sometimes, just when the wires get knocked it will also crash.

The crash is just a complete freeze of everything.

I've rest CMOS and refitted it - apart from dust on the back/top, it looks as good as new.

I say I reset the CMOS because a few times when it logs in, the soundcard isn't recognised and I have to restart to sort it, sometimes resetting the CMOS is the only way to fix it.

I'm reinstalling sound drivers now, but other than that, any ideas?

Remove the soundcard completely and use onboard sound for a few days.

If issues still persist, repost.

If nothing goes wrong for a few days it's clearly the card so reseat it (firmly) and use latest drivers. If it still fucks your comp up see if you can borrow someone elses soundcard. If theirs does the same thing it may be the slot on the motherboard. If theirs is fine, buy a new soundcard.

Can somebody explain to me why Advanced Format hard drives only emulate a regular 512 byte sector hard drive?  I would think they could have some kind of combo drive that allowed for both native 4K addressing and emulation of 512 bytes, there's even a standard for that included in the Advanced Format specifications and stuff.  But they still use this 512 byte emulation stuff exclusively and allow no native addressing of 4K sectors at all as far as I can tell.

Is this so they can improve the manufacturing process while they wait on more applications to actually be able to address 4K sectors or until they can develop firmware that supports both forms of addressing?  Maybe I'm not completely understanding the concept of Advanced Format or the the way it works, it just seems strange that they build the drive a certain way and then make it so it can never possibly live up to its full potential for some reason even when applications actually start supporting it.  There are probably still gains in size from the more space-efficient ECC layout because it's physically there regardless, but the drive will always be neutered until you buy a newer one that supports both types of addressing whenever that becomes available

To be clear, I understand why they support 512 emulation, that much is obvious, but why don't they also support 4K addressing?

So I took bing's blind test. Says bing won four out of five searches I said I preferred over the other. Pretty narrow margin, since the preferred first two or three results for a search are pretty subjective. I might consider using it if I haven't been so busy getting rid of its software in the past.

Anybody used IE10 yet? For win7 or 8? I used it for 8 with the minimalistic approach and it will certainly take some getting used to... However I just got it for Win7 and it's shockingly fast.
To be completely frank I always thought IE got a bum rap when it was often undeserving so. It didn't have the best safety nor did it make design easy. But those were only issues for extremely power users and web designers. And of course this is back before the Apple boom when the whipping boy of the tech world was chiefly Microsoft. And while web designers and power users were justifiably pissed with IE, most people were all too happy to jump on the bandwagon and point fingers when they had no clue what they were talking about. 95% of people who experience IE would open facebook and the slightest thing would go wrong and they'd blame Microsoft when the same instance would happen with Chrome or FF and they wouldn't bat an eye. Either way, I felt as if most issues were with IE8 and prior. IE9 was nice but since it was climbing out of such a deep hole it wasn't going to get noticed.

Anyway, /rant, IE10 seems pretty damn nice fwiw

i tried the beta pre-view in win 7.
on my work machine, i have FF, Chrome, ie 9 and ie8 in a winxp virtual machine.

as someone who supports SaaS (software as a service - our application is web based, not installed) i try to talk each and every one of our customers out of using i e.  Most issues are overcome by simply opening a different browser, and in some cases talking to our customers IT dept. and showing them the benefit of moving away from i e.

we support ie at work, as a last resort. it is as horrible as everyone says it is, and they say it's horrible because it is horrible.

I've got a lot of programs that people use that just don't work with FF and I tell them to use IE. They are astonished it could be so backward but it just goes to show there isn't one perfect browser I guess.

I built my cousin a computer today with his tax return:

Gigabyte GA-B75M-HD3 motherboard
Intel Core i7 3770K processor
16GB of Crucial DDR3
Gigabyte nVidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti 2GB overclocked edition
1 Terabyte Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX
OCZ ZT-series 100% modular 550 Watt Power Supply
Thermaltake Commander MS-I Snow Edition case

I was actually pretty sad that it wasn't my computer after the fact, lol.  Also, the graphics card might or might not match up well with the rest of the specs because it was originally just going to be that and another gig of RAM going into his Dell but due to the proprietary reversed motherboard design and placement of his CPU heatsink, the card wouldn't have fit so I convinced him to just get a whole new build since that one was from 2007 and he wouldn't be sitting on a large sum of money to upgrade with for quite a while.

Building some new servers. Boss told me this is the first box of "many". Good thing he bought them before the whole budget/government thing.
