Katy Perry should be the next Popette.

People pressuring the Vatican to not chose a European are being prejudiced.

Kind of surprised the Pope's resignation hasn't been brought up yet. Anyone got any thoughts about that? Personally I always thought the sooner this Pope moved on in whatever form the better. A backwards-thinking child rape covering-up unapologetic waste of space who proliferated idiocy like banning condoms, who was closed minded towards things like homosexuality and stem cell research as well as the concept of female priests. He even tip-toed around evolution more than his predecessor.

The Catholic Church needs a strong and progressive leader rather than another old man caught a couple of centuries in the past. Their main concern is still popularity of course and maintaining their followers. They're not going to do this if they remain as disconnected as they are.
So, you're saying the next pope shouldn't be Catholic?

Their main concern seems to be adhering to what they perceive as holy tradition.
If they were concerned about popularity and maintaining their followers, they'd have made more efforts to bring the Lutherans and other offshoot sects back into the fold.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of any flavor of middle eastern mythology - Judaism, Christianity, Islam, or any of their offshoot sects.
But the creaking, ancient, tradition and secrecy bound Catholic church needs to go away.
Of any of the Abrahamic religions, the Catholic church has wandered further from their origins, into a creaking relic of traditions, secrets, and self-preservation.
There is no Church anymore - just the creaking relics, traditions, and influence peddling.

But, really, Martin Luther said it better five hundred years ago.

actually for a conservative-traditionalist ratzinger made several major theological distinctions/redactions to that 'holy tradition' they are so keen to keep. quite minor to a non-religious person, but huge reforms of the catholic faith in-itself. for e.g. stating explicitly that the death of christ was not the fault of the jews; declaring that purgatory/limbo as a concept does not exist, etc. these are huge changes in the theological framework of catholicism and its adherents' values and attitudes.

If she got pregnant would her breast milk replace the holy water in the Vatican?

Change doctrine to score a few converts? Stupid.

Why? They've done it before. Consistently actually. The Catholic Church is essentially engaged in a popularity contest, they know this.

The Catholic Church takes a great deal of pride in their legions of followers, most likely thanking God Almighty that so many of them are poor and uneducated and don't know enough to question the authority of the church. However in the Western world the Vatican has been increasingly disconnected and the Catholic Church is losing followers in droves - mostly because these people no longer feel Catholicism is relevant to them. If the Vatican wants to keep these people changing doctrine is exactly what they're going to have to do.

Pope John-Paul II was making advances in a number of areas while remaining fairly conservative, it would have been nice if Benedict XVI built on this rather than scrapping it in a move back to more "traditional" grounds.

Not really. The church has resisted change more often than it has embraced it for any reason. I can continually list times when the church refused to change doctrine even though it would score them converts. I struggle to remember times when they changed anything serious to get new members.

Like their refusal to incorporate Chinese practices in order to gain China as members. Their refusal to compromise in order to bring back the Orthodox and Protestants. Etc.

They changed around the edges but nothing big enough to claim the church as some sort of ever expanding color changing lizard

They certainly resist it but increasingly this is getting harder as their traditional base deserts them for more progressive faiths. You're right though, they've certainly resisted it more than they've embraced it. Any change usually comes with an apology as to why they resisted it for so long as well as their expressions of regret for the immense damage this caused.

I'm not going to let a bit of hypocrisy distract me from all the good that the Catholic church has been doing. An example: Franciscan Health System/Catholic Health Initiatives actively tries to slash bills partway or all the way for low income patients, and they actually approach patients with a sales pitch for it. It's true that they get deductions for it, but it's still a great service.

I don't think I'll be joining, but I can respect them.

Their base isn't going anywhere. Don't project new Zealand on the rest of the world. They are still strong in Latin and other parts of Europe. Latin America is on lock. Catholics in America still are strong. Africa has potential. And the Philippines, bless their hearts, are still strongly Catholic.

More progressive faiths lol. Yeah those are flying strong. So many people stopping going to their Methodist churches for Sun worshiping

I have no idea how the Catholic Church is faring in New Zealand, my opinion actually comes from record numbers of Catholics leaving the church in Germany and Austria. Granted they don't necessarily reflect the rest of the world either but I think there has been a widespread backlash against the church, particularly due to the ongoing child sex abuse scandals.

A California man is accused of raping a woman he met on a Christian dating website -- and police fear there may be other victims.

Sean Banks, 37, met the victim on the matchmaking website Christianmingle.com, where he went by the user name "Raritiy," La Mesa Police said in a statement.

Banks used three additional online identities --"Rylan," "Rylan Butterwood" and "Rylan Harbough" --and police said they are concerned "there may have been more cases with other women."

zeus was the best at rape, in various stages of disguise and metamorphosis. he was straight dialled in with his right-hand rape technique.

dionysus is pretty cool too - becoming a snake and crawling inside alexander the great's mother to 'give birth' to the great scion (this is his self-perpetuating myth, anyway; alexander the great's dad actually caught his momma in bed with a snake inside her ratchet, and refused to ever sleep with her again... and he did some pretty barbaric things in his own reign).
