Thats why Gillard called the election isn't it?
With the election date set there is no requirement to call by-elections for Thomson or anyone else, eg Slipper, so she clings on to power for another 8 months. Smart, but slimy, move.
So who leaked the information to her that Thomson was about to be charged?

I'm sure she would have been approached by police before they made the arrest.

I don't think Thomson is strategic enough to be a blip on the radar in regard to why Gillard called the election when she did. How was it going to change things? Arrested or not Thomson is still presumed innocent and the Parliament still has no power to remove him from his seat.
Wondering how long it will take the papers to start writing "New Zealand born politician Craig Thomson..."

It's early days yet and of course his layer is biased towards Thomson, yet I doubt he would fabricate a statement that went something along the lines of "one of the 149 charges was for $12.50. Another is for buying an icecream". He did admit he had not seen the list yet as at that point he had known about the arrest for around 1.5 hours; he said he had been told some of the charges over the phone.
The news says he's upset.Adams_BJ wrote:

...BREAKING NEWS!
Federal Labor MP Mike Kelly talks about how the Coalition are bad for engaging in smearing and sledging. Without a trace of self-awareness he proceeds to tell Tony Abbott off for "squawking like a demented budgie" and does a mocking impression.
I wonder if they listen to themselves or if they just sort of tune in and out.

If he pleaded guilty that would mean an immediate election wouldn't it?Ty wrote:

It may be in 'Murica, its actually relatively new for Aus.
When every party's slogan is "Vote for me because I suck marginally less than them" it gets tiring quickly.
Still, it nearly worked for Rmoney.

I was referring more to the "accuse the other side of name calling and fear mongering by calling them names and fear mongering" bit.

Very very very unlikely. One MP leaving their seat for any reason never means a whole new election, all it means is a by-election for that one seat. It would take a Hell of a lot of unlikely occurrences for it to result in a scenario when there would be a need for the Governor General to dissolve the house and call an immediate election.Dilbert_X wrote:

Either way, Gillard calling the election has less than zero impact on it all.

Oh fuck, it's going to be like this is it?
Abbott started out telling his caucus that there focus needed to be on presenting themselves as an attractive alternative Government, not an Opposition. Promising signs.
What's the first order of business then? Oh right, stir up speculation yet a-fucking-gain about Kevin Rudd plotting to take over the Labor Leadership and when Labor responds to this accuse them of focussing on themselves rather than real issues like helping those effected by bush fires.
Fuck me, I kind of hoped I wouldn't start the sitting year with the same raw hatred I had at the end of the last one, I guess it was too much to ask.

I wish labor were as ruthless in running such a single minded campaign and governed as one force as the liberals do.
They can only do so much good, but the liberals can do so much bad more efficiently.

I'm don't understand why the Libs make it out like they're doing such a tough job. Their motto is "don't spend anything". Hurrah! Meanwhile health, education and infrastructure fall by the wayside. Not that they would know, or care.
It's frustrating. On big ticket policy I'm for the most part extremely impressed with Gillard but fuck me she and her staff must be the worst political strategists I've ever seenAussieReaper wrote:

Labour has been cutting federal health budgets and putting state's responsible so they can have a surplus. What they're doing is making states front up the first 40% of the cash, with the federal gov paying the last 60% so they can blame the next people in power for not keeping a surplus.Jaekus wrote:

Aussie government debt is fine, I don't really see the big fuss on why we need a surplus budget.
Cos Peter Costello said so. While giving away stupid amounts of middle class handouts
