A suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at the entrance of the U.S. Embassy in the Turkish capital on Friday, killing himself and one other person, officials said.

U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardione told reporters that a guard at the gate was killed in the 1:15 p.m. blast, and a Turkish citizen was wounded.

The bomb appeared to have exploded inside the security checkpoint at the side entrance of the embassy, but did not do damage inside the embassy itself. Footage showed that the door had been blown off its hinges and debris littered the ground and across the road. An Associated Press journalist saw a body in the street in front of an embassy side entrance.
Hmm Turkey is one of the more advanced and Western Muslim states. At least not a lot of people were killed.

Maybe it had to do with those three kurdish activist that were murdered a short time ago in Paris?

We had 3 mass shootings in 6 months. Our last one was in December and January already passed so we might be getting one sometime this month.

The other threads have gone off track too, does this imply that we need bad things happening for D&ST to keep going and stay focused?

Mass shootings and gun control are (obviously) closely related topics. Having one bleed into the other is as predictable as the sunrise.

So, obviously, getting into gun control/2d Amendment discussions isn't really "off track".

So I think Alaska would join Canada if there was a revolution. It doesn't really make any sense for Russia to have any claim as their borders are not contiguous.

Why would anyone join or take over anyone? Taking over a piece if the U.S. will just mean that once the U.S. reforms itself it will attack you. Why would China take over California? This isn't the 19th century. You don't need to hold pieces of land to have influence or access to resources. Dumb line of thought all of you.

It is also slightly paranoid. To think that the world is going to cut us up and enslave us at the first sign of trouble. Sounds like something out of the 60's.

The genocide was about a 100 years and done under a completely different government.

Turkey is very secular. They don't allow women to wear head scarves in the public service or at universities. They have a drinking culture. Legalized and regulated prostitution. Abortion is legal. The U.N. list the country as an advanced economy. Etc.

The fact that they are a bit heavy handed in their fight against separatist is a convenient excuse for European politicians to justify not letting them into the EU because their populations don't want Turkish Muslims to immigrate into their countries.

Nail on the head.

xenophobia.

No chance for them in the near future. Either the migration laws have to change, the EU's and/or Turkey's culture have to change, or a major disaster in which alignment with Turkey is essential will have to occur.
