Wal-Mart Stores ( , Fortune 500) said Tuesday that, over the next five years, it will hire every veteran who honorably left the military in the last year.

More than 100,000 people are expected to find work through the program, making it one of the largest hiring commitments for veterans on record, the nation's largest retailer said.

How is this fair to people who didn't go into the military? Veterans already get a million benefits and access to programs that non vets don't. How about there be an initiative to hire people who went to college instead of the armed forces? Your typical college student is more qualified for any job than some veteran who spent 4 years living on some base in the middle east all expenses paid.

Spend 4 years in a kitchen on a base in the middle of Afghanistan fighting potatoes and get free healthcare for life, free college, super low interest loans, pensions, and get hired over anyone else just because we are supposed to treat you guys like heroes. I have done more things than sit on a base getting paid to watch T.V. and workout over the last 4 years. Where is my parade?

Regardless of their motives to enlist, the fact that so many people do keeps them a happily draft-free volunteer military. If you want to emphasize the quality of private effort over government service, whining whenever a business throws a bone their way isn't how you do it. Accessing some of those post-enlistment perks is easier said than done, anyway.

For some people, having a shit job is better than having no job. Its not like everyone in the armed forces comes back with a skill that's easily applicable to the civilian world.

If a college kid is pissed off about missing an opportunity to work at Walmart they need to ask themselves why they bothered to get a tertiary education. No one goes to university in order to work at Walmart.

Don't ask me how and maybe my idea is a just that, idealistic, but leaving the military to work at fucking Walmart strikes me as a bit of a low blow (yes I acknowledge it is better than being unemployed).

The trouble with post military life Mac, is that veterans have a hard time adjusting, they have a hard time applying their skills to civilian life. They spend 4 years being told what to do all day every day, learning specialised skills. When they get out they need to relearn how to be a civilian. Giving them job opportunities is going to save a lot of headaches.

People coming out of college have skills (mostly) that are applicable to the real world, they have lived in the real world. They don't need to re adjust. If they want a job they are familiar with what they are required to have/do. They don't need to be told.

There are a lot of job opportunities @Walmart that don't involve greeting people at doorways or stocking shelves at night...

Management or people working in the control areas of distribution centers are going to be making ~$40k+ with acceptable benefits, and from the people I know who work in such capacities, they are relatively cake jobs. For someone starting out, and especially in regions where Walmart is particularly concentrated, it's not such a bad route to take if you can stomach working for Walmart. That seems to be the biggest hangup - the stigma of the name....

There's no law against NOT expanding your skills while in the military. In fact, it's a perfect opportunity to do so.

Only problem is, like in school, most people procrastinate or don't work at it at all.

Most MOS' in the airforce and navy are "real world skills." being a frontline grunt isn't really going to help you get a job, but being a mechanic at motor T or fixing helicopters will land you some pretty cool jerbs.
