Honestly it's pretty common for some laptop GPUs to get that hot during gaming sessions. It is certainly possible that is what cause the shutdown, however I have seen laptop GPUs hit 100C while gaming and still running.

E:

I think I'm definitely going to have to buy one of these. Was going to get a standard ASUS ultrabook, but I think I need one of these now

in a few years:

single processor and basic GPU in the tablet portion of the above video for basic tablet computing, however can connect to keyboard but under the keyboard is a blu-ray player as well as another CPU/GPU and more RAM that add on-the-fly for more powerful computing.

no need to restart or anything, just reconnect the tablet portion to the base/keyboard and you'll have twice the power for gaming.

edito: well i guess i should have just continued watching the video. but anyway, the same way that storage is added on that video - just processor/video power as well as ram and components (e.g. more USB slots or a blu-ray)

I ended up getting the GSIII.  I like it so far.

Now does anyone have an suggestions for headphones.   I would prefer them to be under 100 dollars, but I am willing to go all the way up to around 200 dollars if there is a set of headphones that is really worth it.

I already have a pair of Klipsch Image S4's I have been using since my Koss Porta-Pros broke and I would like to relegate them to only using when I need portability.

Depends what you're using them for I suppose, but I really like my Sennheiser HD555s and the new version the HD558s seem to be good quality and very popular. If you don't want to spend that sort of money (not sure how much they cost over there) then the Audio Technica ATH-A500 are good (but usually not much less than the HD558s) or the HD518 are a very good option for the price.

Using them mostly for listening to music off my laptop.

Quick Amazon search has the Audio Technicas as 100+ dollars more than the HD558s.  (558s are $179 on Amazon).  Do I need some sort of extra tech to make a headphone like the HD558s reach their true potential?

You may be looking at the X version of the Audio Technicas which are usually more expensive.

Anyway, if you're using a laptop there is a reasonable chance that the sound card wouldn't be that great. Ideally you would run the headphones through a DAC as long you aren't wanting to cart them around too much. Something like the Audinst HUD-mx1 or Audioengine D1 are decent little DACs. However, then you're looking at another $150+ ontop of the headphones so you may be going too much over budget.

Otherwise you can just use the headphones with your laptop normally (they all come with 3.5mm adapters) and then decide later on down the track if you want/need a DAC.

I've got the Audio Technica ATH-AD700, great headphones for around $150 shipped in Australia so I'd guess they might be a bit cheaper overseas. The bass is a bit on the quiet side but the detail in the mids and treble is fantastic for the price.

As for DAC options I know very little but have heard good things about Audioengine's DAC. It also looks quite small which makes it good for portability with a laptop - http://audioengineusa.com/Store/Audioen … Oz0YW_ql8E

^That's what I was looking at when I was pricing the A500s.

I'm not sure I will know if I need/want a DAC since I won't really know what the difference is without buying one. Right?

If I were to by $300 headphones and I was using a laptop I would definitely get a DAC.

Strange that is over $100 more than from my usual audio store here.

Anyway, you certainly won't get the best out of HD558 grade headphones with standard laptop audio. The only way you would really know is if you actually noticed noise or interference (which is common among some laptops), or if you simply noticed a overall lack of clarity, muddy sound, poor bass etc. Naturally it is hard to know without something to compare it to.

It just depends on your budget really I suppose. You could grab the HD518s and probably be happy enough with them on your laptop audio. But if you were willing to spend some more money for better quality, then if you were getting the HD558s then it would be worthwhile grabbing a DAC.

^^ agreed.

When I bought headphones I could not tell the difference between mp3 and FLAC audio. Then I bought an Asus Xonar STX soundcard... very big difference between that and the motherboard's built in sound, and yes, I can hear the difference between mp3 and FLAC.

My iPhone's battery is apparently garbage if I charge it from the wall but it lasts forever through my computer's USB port.

Charged from computer and then idling overnight = 5% of the battery drained

Charged from wall and then idling overnight = literally 40% of the battery drained and this is after it loses 15% just sitting next to me for two hours of very little usage before I go to bed

I don't know what the hell is going on but I don't think I'm ever charging from the wall now if I can help it

Have you looked into the type of electricity your computer is using? Make sure it's the brand they recommend.

In response to these threats, many in the tech community have recommended that people uninstall Java altogether. However, this can be impractical for some, as many people need Java to run applications, including Web apps and a number of technical and creative development tools1.

Had to google that term, and no it shouldn't be because I've only used it once.  I used my friend's charger one time at his too though and I think it did the same thing

I wasn't sure where to post this.

I installed this game: Sega Smash Pack II which is pretty old, so when I launch the game, the image only occupies 1/4 of the screen, the rest is black. Changing the screen resolution didn't change anything.

Anyone know how to fix this?

According to that website, you have to use DOSBox to run KGen.
