Seriously though, I can understand the potential need to have a handgun, and if you're a hunter of course a rifle is necessary. It's been over 6 hours and a few pages and no one has actually said why they need an automatic weapon.
And before anyone says self defence, if you actually need that kind of stopping power to defend yourself I daresay you're fucked from the outset and brought it upon yourself.

My iPhone won't kill dozens of kids in a school. And I don't trust half the people on the road in their cars, let alone the same people with a firearm.
You can't. So instead you restrict access and make it tougher to obtain in the first place with much harsher penalties if the weapon is misused.
