Army suicides have increased by at least 54 percent since 2007 when there were 115 — a number the Washington Post then called "an all-time record." An Army spokesman said Wednesday it is uncertain if 177 marks a new annual high (with December numbers still to come), or if suicides have ever outpaced combat deaths in a single year, because the Army has not always tracked suicides.
Just following the nation trend. Suicides have been going up since '07 for everyone. Bad economies do that/ Soldier suicides have probably been outpacing civilians due to U.S. soldiers not collecting any employable skills while fighting in the sand dunes of the middle east. Add to that the people who tend to join the military usually lack support network or opportunities at home.

I like how the silly ass second graph I pulled off of one U.S. soldier donation site stopped tracking civilian deaths at '07. Civilian suicides keeping pace with the Navy and Air force as well as not too far off from the Marines and Army doesn't fit the narrative of the poor U.S. soldier who just needs a bit more help.

You're an idiot. Military suicides don't have anything to do with lack of 'employable skills' (what a bunch of bullshit anyway, employers seek people with military experience over those that don't given equal qualifications). It's loneliness coupled with a hyper macho environment where talking about feelings is a sign of weakness. Military life is hard. You might get stuck in a place thousands of miles from home, you might have a vindictive sergeant, you might not have any friends, and everyone you know back home is changing while you're gone making you feel even more displaced and transient.

In May, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported the national unemployment rate ticked up to 8.2%, but the unemployment rate for young veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan spiked to 12.7% — more than 4 percentage points higher than the national average.

These stats aren’t outliers. Last year, the unemployment number for new vets in New York was 16.7%; in the nation as a whole, it was 12.1%. That’s over 234,000 new veterans looking for work after separating from the military. For veterans ages 18 to 24 years old, the outlook was even worse – nearly 30 percent unemployment.
It is the unemployment rate.

That has less to do with earned skills and more to do with the fact that there are a lot of people in the military that have become institutionalized, the same as long term prisoners do. They've become dependent on someone telling them when to eat and sleep, not having to worry about getting fired, or paying the rent. When you treat people like children for so long, they become as helpless as them.

No it has to do with skills. Who do you think has more skills once the 4 years are up? A person who got a degree from a top 100 school or a person who spent 4 years getting shot at by farmers trying to protect their land? A lot of people have a hard time adjusting to life after college too. Besides most veterans aren't out patrolling the streets of Kabul. For every solider in the field you have what 10 "veterans" sitting at base doing chores. So spare me the veterans have it hard crap.

I'm so tired of the glorification and cuddling we are expected to give veterans.

I'm not even going to get mad at you about this, because you're just a child and don't know any better. I'm sorry that someone that joined the military made you feel bad. I'm sorry that it's turned you into a hateful self-loathing person.

Whether you're tired of the coddling and glorification, the fact of the matter is that each and every one of those people decided to do something not wholly selfish with their life for the supposed betterment of the nation. What have you done for anyone besides yourself? Right. Nothing. You're a coward, and you know it, and it makes you feel bad. It's why you choose to voyeuristically watch other people engage in fights that you know you'd never have the balls to. You're a sad, pathetic human being macbeth.

Zique, I'm sorry that I wasn't born with a rich daddy like you that would've enabled me to lead a pampered life with no responsibilities. Some people actually have to work before they finish college, and no that doesn't include working a summer internship at an apple store lolololol

Yeah the soldiers have bettered our society all right. Ever since WW2 they have wasted their lives protecting an empire that enjoys spending its free time watching keeping up with the Kardashians. Oh and they collected a paycheck for doing it too. Hell of an accomplishment there. I have to say I'm awfully jealous of those people.

I would be insulted by you calling me a pathetic person if I didn't know you SOLD YOUR SOUL to the Empire of America for $10,000 a year in tuition.

Okay this seems like a good time to just put this out there.  I've been coming here for a long time and liked it back in the day where there were all kinds of crazy topics that got out of hand and this place was generally just more entertaining.  I mean, hell, we even had a lib vs. conservative match in BF2.  Now it's all gotten to be dick waving and personal insults.  Kind of natural I guess when the same people go to the same place for such a long time.  I personally don't give a fuck about your personal lives, no offense or anything but imo your opinion and reasoning should stand on it's own, not what you have or have not accomplished in life.  Now I'm still a kid and I know it, my views might be completely different 5 years from now but Jay you will still be a weirdo.  You spend all day teaching the gospel of Any Rand and bitching about government left and right yet you live in the most communist city in the country and use one of the largest mass transit systems in the world everyday.  You say you want the military cut down to a purely defensive force yet you call me a coward for even suggesting the idea of bringing back the draft (something btw I do not believe is feasible).  Care to tell me how exactly you'll get away with having no professional military force and no form of compulsory service?  Me and mac mention something about military elitism and you respond with calling us both cowards.  Has it ever occurred that maybe you can present your views without being such a dick about it?  I feel comfortable saying this because there are hardly any people here who you have not had some form of personal feud with.

You're really going to say that?

I bet at least half the people joining the military would take an equivalent govt job with all the benefits on lower pay if it were available and didn't involve being shot at.
All the articles I find suggest money and lack of other opportunities are the major drivers, not patriotism.

It doesn't even need to be like that, its counterproductive in so many ways, not least for the military.

I don't preach Ayn Rand. I preach fiscal responsibility and social libertarianism.

I live in a communist city? Is that a fancy term for 'most hyper-capitalist city in the world'? If this were a communist city then there wouldn't be such a huge disparity between the ultra wealthy and the ultra poor now would there?

I use a mass transit system that was founded as a private railroad and was taken over by the government when it went bankrupt in the 60s. If you ever rode it you wouldn't blast me for riding on it. Crowded, smelly, filthy, overpriced and breaks down when we get a half inch of rain.

Not that I expect you to read every post I've ever written, but I've said repeatedly in the past that what we would ideally have is a much scaled down active military force with a bumped up reserve component to compensate for it.

Here's a tip: don't align yourself with Macbeth when arguing with me or you'll get lumped into the vitriol. He is the consummate chickenhawk.

Yes, I could present my views without being such a dick, and I've done that for months at a time in the past, but certain members can't go more than a post or two without insulting me, so I fire it back.

It's nice that you feel safe in attacking me because everyone else does. Shows how much of a spine you have.

But you practice self-interest, take minimal personal responisbility and take advantage of every socialised benefit on offer, from controlled rents to free college from the govt, while criticising others who have been less dependent on the state.

^ This is why people think you're a dick. You're a loudmouthed and offensive hypocrite who preaches one thing and does another.

because you are indefensible. you took government welfare money to get into college, fell under the influence of the campus-classic, toted by bad faux-intellectuals in bad faith across the western world, and started reading ayn rand. you had the temerity to go around in your earlier phase holding up ayn rand as some philosopher queen... even though the only reason you were at a college in touch with her intellectual ideas is because of a government welfare handout. a freudian or psychologist would suggest you fell under the sway and allure of this hack-philosophy so much because it spoke to everything in you that you wished you genuinely were. presenting yourself as some arch-randian was your way of remaking yourself in a new image.

you are the perfect model of cognitive dissonance here on bf2s. a curious fellow.

What I think is despicable is when people abandon their homeland and migrate to other countries for a better climate and career opportunites, taking their taxes with them, rather than stay and try to fix the nation which raised and educated them, broken through no fault of their own by worthless politicians who have themselves emigrated to foreign climes and riches.

Those people are traitors and cowards, running away like smelly weasels.

Here's a quote from Churchill about patriotism:

"A love for tradition has never weakened a nation, indeed it has strengthened nations in their hour of peril"
Churchill is my hero, he didn't run away when it suited him.
