Cowards?

You signed up because you were too scared to back yourself with a loan, too scared to work your ass off putting yourself through college, too scared to take any financial risk yourself.
You signed up for what you thought would be a cushy peace-time ticket to a risk-free degree, not to risk yourself for truth and liberty or your fellow man.

According to your own account you  disobeyed ordered and ran away from your post when the bombs started dropping - please don't call people cowards.

Lol, I didn't disobey orders and run away. I walked into a building that was 15 feet away and didn't think to reassign my phone number to be in there. You think I got rocketed on one day only? Please. We had mortars and rockets dropping almost every single day. That was just the day I remember as being the worst.

Thats not exactly how you wrote it in your Iraq war story though is it?

Didn't you tell your officer to go fuck himself as you ran to the shelter? I remember something like that.

No, I didn't, and if I wrote that, it was poetic license for what I wish I would've said or what I thought.

Since you actually bothered reading the story all those years ago, here's a better perspective on the action. Purple circle is where the US embassy was, the red circle is where my company was living at the time, you can see the helicopter airfield between us and the embassy. The blue circle is where the PM's office was, and the orange circle is near where the 1st Cav fuel dump that blew up was located.

What ever happened to the concept of citizen soldiers?  So now the only way to be a man is to serve professionally in the armed services?

Yup.

Join the Army or Marines, kill a bear, fuck a model, own a home, get a masters degree, and father a child.

Otherwise, if you haven't done all of those by 40, you have to cut off your dick, hand it in to the local DMV, and commit suicide.

Hemingway forgot the degree, had to shoot himself in shame.

If the public knew their kids might have to fight they'd think a bit harder about who they voted into office.

That's the exact reason.  While it might be "inconsistent with a free society", I think the professional military does nothing but promote imperialism, military elitism, and political apathy.  Afghanistan is the Vietnam war in slow motion.

Also, rich kids should be forced to serve as enlisted

Yes, force a bunch of people to fight overseas against their will for the inane reasonings of politicians. Everyone should dance a jig when the masters play at international politics. Politicians always have the good of the people foremost in their mind when they cast their votes.

The shortest contract offered by the army is for a two year enlistment in the infantry or military police. Feel free to sign up if you're feeling left out spearhead.

It is entirely inconsistent with a free society. You already knew the answer to your question.

You're acting as if the current alternative is somehow much better.

A ) Force people to fight a war they don't believe in, oh and by the way hold your politicians accountable for their actions

B ) What we have now

So you're saying the Vietnam was okay, it was just the draft that was wrong with it?  You fully endorse everything we're doing in the Middle East, right?  Oh wait.

Your position makes it easier for the politicians to get what they want.  An interventionist foreign policy.  Is this consistent with a free society?

And you're calling me a hypocrite.... lol

I am, because we had a draft and it didn't do anything to stop overseas adventurism. We still went to war in Korea and Vietnam. What we need is a shrunken military, not a draftee army. Having an all volunteer military doesn't overly empower the idiots in Washington, it's you and me for continually voting them back into office with a 90% reelection rate. You would willingly sacrifice the life and liberty of others so you could feel less bad about yourself when someone who served looked down on you. How pathetic are you?

I bet it sounded really wise when Jon Stewart said it though, didn't it?

True, but the ceasefire in Korea was called because of the dissatisfaction at home and the Vietnam war all but destroyed the military as an institution.  Until, of course, the Gulf war, which was fought by volunteers.

The Vietnam war should have ended US military adventurism, they learned their lesson though and used borrowed money to fund wars carried by highly paid contractors and the children of the poor - instead of drafting rich people's kids.

The public doesn't care too much about contractors or poor kids, they're both only there for the money.

A volunteer military does empower politicians to do what they want, and they know it takes far longer for the public to wake up to irresponsible spending than irresponsible use of draftees lives - hence they way they're fighting wars now.

Jay did you know that when you go to jury duty you're actually being drafted by the government?  Is my life and liberty more important than a functioning criminal justice system or is it sometimes necessary in the real world to force people to do things they don't want to do?

And no I'm not saying the military is like jury duty.

Can anyone explain the psychology behind being so adamant about raising taxes on those making $250,000 or more per year? Why that cutoff? And to what purpose if it isn't even going to raise more than maybe 30-50 billion dollars a year when we have an annual deficit more than 20 times as large? Why has this become the big Democrat policy for the fiscal cliff discussions? It's not rational at all.

To hurt a smaller number of voters compared with a larger number of voters?

Why is the GOP so butthurt about going back to Reagan-era tax rates?
How is returning CGT to what it was under Reagan going to cause Armageddon?

The smarter thing to do would be leave income tax as it is and normalise CGT - since thats how the wealthy receive much of their income, its hardly reasonable to give the wealthy a tax benefit on shares and not give the same benefit to the poor on their savings - effectively taxing the porr to subsidise the rich.

Former sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe says members of the New Year honours committee made a "big mistake" in not recognising more Paralympic athletes.

He said Paralympians were not put on an equal footing with Olympic medallists and that was a "missed opportunity".

Oh dear lord....
Our local newspaper had a front page story about Lee Pearson (paralympic equestrian) he's won 10 golds over the past few games, and has an OBE. The headline was "Why wasn't I knighted?", he answered the question himself by asking it, the fucking tool.
