Why isn't Malcolm Turnbull the leader again yet? Loved his exchange with Rupert Murdoch over Twitter. Murdoch was lamenting the Newton massacre, asking when will the US act as Australia did and ban automatic weapons as they did after the Port Arthur. Turnbull responded "I suspect they will find the courage when Fox News enthusiastically campaigns for it." Both a burn and incredibly accurate.

Newton massacre involved a semi-auto .223. It's next to impossible to get a class 3 firearm in the US without a lot of money and very good reason.

Hmm, not sure how Martin Bryant got hold of a gun "On leaving school he was assessed for a disability pension by a psychiatrist who wrote: "Cannot read or write. Does a bit of gardening and watches TV ... Only his parents' efforts prevent further deterioration. Could be schizophrenic and parents face a bleak future with him.....Father protects him from any occasion which might upset him as he continually threatens violence ... Martin tells me he would like to go around shooting people. It would be unsafe to allow Martin out of his parents' control".

I would like to see our firearms laws become similar to NZ's, I've heard that they arent totally retarded and are somewhat more relaxed. But then again, I dont really want bogans with guns.

Just have a basic grammar test and bam, bogans can't get guns.

I wouldn't say they're more relaxed. Hunting rifles and shotguns require a licence which means a written test, character reference, and a police arms officer to come and inspect your home to ensure you have secure lockable storage. The licence endorsements you need in order to own handguns or military style rifles are even more strict. A lot of the rules are unenforceable but it creates an attitude where people just see no reason for owning a handgun or military-style rifle. And there is isn't really any reason - certainly not in NZ anyway.

Bogans already have guns, I don't like to create division in the small shooting community but just go to any SSAA club.

There are various commercial ranges around the country where you can basically buy a handgun license and then do what you like.
eg http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/br … 6529737130

Handgun licensing is far too slack IMO, its just as easy to get a 9mm as it is to get a .22.

I don't get the whole deal with "military style weapons." A weapon is a weapon is a weapon. Cosmetics are for gear queers anyway.

In terms of drawing a line in the sand its useful though. Some of the characteristics that classify a rifle as a Military Style Semi Automatic are:
- Pistol grip
- Magazine that can or looks like it can hold more than 15 .22 rounds or more than 7 rounds of any other round.
- Foldable/telescopic butt
- Bayonet lug
- Flash suppressor

It's more then cosmetics. A pistol grip is good if you want to do a lot of firing from the hip or reaction shooting. The magazine rule prevents anyone from being able to fire more than 7 shots without having to re-load, (or 15 .22 rounds.) A foldable or telescopic butt makes a weapon better at being fired from the hip. The bayonet lug rule is pretty obvious. And the flash suppressor mostly got put in there because David Gray used one to hide in the dark and shoot people during the Aramoana massacre.

It essentially means that someone with a normal firearms licence like mine can't buy a gun designed to kill people. These types of weapons aren't good for hunting, nor for target shooting, (if your intent is to actually hit something rather than just fire a lot of shots.) A flash suppressor isn't going to do shit to help you shoot a deer, nor is being able to fire ten-plus shots in quick succession. I know Jay likes saying that people don't like weapons like the Bushmaster because they look scary but the truth is that while they're average at best in regard to small game shooting or target shooting they are pretty damn good at shooting people. The reason this sort of logic doesn't do anything for Americans is because they hold gear-queers and those who like firing off bursts of ammunition at nothing as people with a right worthy of protection - or because they feel such a weapon is a needed tool to defend their homes with. Here having a military style weapon is just a good way to make yourself look like a knob. Different cultures, different values.

In Australia at least most of the gun crime is between bikies or those mafia cunts in Melbourne.

I understand the whole flash surpressor and magazine part, but if you're taking accurate shots a pistol grip won't make that much of a difference. Bayonet lug is just... yeah a bayonet is your primary worry when someone is shooting someone out.

Foldable stocks won't make much of a difference if someone is going on a rampage. Just hide an AR in your golf bag and boom, best concealable bag ever.

Pistol grips are useful when making reaction shots, makes it easier to keep your firing hand in position when not looking down the sights. And if you fold a stock down the weapon won't be as stable but you'll be able to move it around a lot easier. Both additions make it a lot easier to fire from the hip and there's not really any legal reason you'd want to be able to do that. It probably doesn't make the weapon any deadlier, (I'm an advocate of a well-aimed shot over a number of hastily-placed shots,) but the point is if you want a weapon that you can wave around easily and fire effectively without aiming then you're probably not going after goats.

Bayonet lug is a bit pointless admittedly, I think it just re-enforces the point that firearms in NZ are not meant to kill people. Would probably be useful in pig hunting though.

Edit: Hah, just realised you wrote that in the other thread hours ago.

Pretty hard to hide a full-length AR in a sports bag, even a golf bag - hence the folding butt-stock restriction.

And people believe the Libs are fiscally conservative...

Australia's most wasteful spending came in Howard era, finds IMF

Sure, they left office with a surplus, but it could've been much higher had they not frittered away the benefits of the mining boom.

Colour me unsurprised. The LNP are going to have to do a lot better policy wise to prove they're a good alternate government. Hate to point it out but over the last week I've seen pretty much their whole carbon policy literally burn to the ground.

Barry O'Farrell sacked 260 fire fighters in NSW and what's the first thing Abbott do? Goes to his local fire station to get his photo in the paper wearing a fireman's outfit. What a fucking joke.

Oh yeah, that was a fucking joke. I appreciate that Abbott has been a long-standing member of his local RFS but if he really waned to just do his job as a volunteer firefighter he wouldn't have announced what he was doing. I was covering an interview with Joanna Gash, (Federal Liberal MP/Mayor of Shoalhaven,) and she was singing his praises about coming down to help out and all too happy to inform listeners that "actually Tony's been a member of the RFS for 20 years". Could almost hear Abbott's image controllers talking in her ear.

But it's great really, and good on Abbott for volunteering as a firefighter. But it's blatantly part of this big LNP move to try and showcase a new image for Abbott - since his current one blows. Abbott happily announced to all that he was going to help with the fires. Gash among others was presumably tasked with promoting it if they could. And short of declining media requests for interviews Abbott happily let slip his details and had a nice chat, presumably creating a media throng and getting in the way of the serious work that he was supposed to be doing.

Not that I want to give the Abbott team advice, but it would have been so much better if Abbott just fulfilled his role as a volunteer firefighter without announcing it and just left it at that. How great then would it have been if it got out somehow a couple of weeks from now that Abbott was helping to combat the bush fires. What a good image that would be - Tony Abbott, humbly gets on with the job. Doesn't seek accolades or attention, just does it because that's the kind of guy Abbott is.

Except he's not of course. Couldn't help himself. Had to try and get all the kudos he could straight away.

I wonder how often Abbott's fire unit sees him around when he's not trying to reinvent his image.
