Ok. I guess we should start with the Statue of Liberty then.

Maybe I'll swing by St. Petersburg when I go on my planned trip to Scandinavia in a few years.

you'd also need warman to read the traffic signs for you. don't forget to have his parents teach him some russian though.

p.s. and, jay, the statue's big, but cannot be seen from st.petersburg.

Shahter, is there anything left of old Konigsberg (Kaliningrad) or did the Soviets completely wipe it out?

soviets build a lot of stuff themselves. in old Konigsberg you wouldn't be able to see anything you couldn't in, say, czechia. in soviet Kaliningrad, though...

his parents' greatest fear was a red dawn scenario, because of that patrick swayze movie (propaganda for wisconsin, as it were). if i had to ride in a plane with warman, it would be to australia, and i would tweet all the shit he said before we got there, and a vidcamera on the mayhem that ensued.

i would win an award on "America's Funniest Videos"

Perhaps, but I don't have any attachment to Russian culture or architecture. Konigsberg interested me because my grandmother's family was from East Prussia (now Poland), and I wanted to see the seven bridges that Euler made famous.

i'm not an expert in any sense, but, contrary to what you might have been told, soviets where very careful about historical stuff, architecture included, that didn't serve as symbols of something they perceived as threatening to their ideology. after ww2 soviets carefully restored, in some cases rebuild from scratch, a lot of stuff that was destroyed.
see some tourist ads for kaliningrad, maybe those things you want to see are still there.

Yes, but what is the point if there are no German people there anymore? It's just a ghost of a city. I think it would make me sad more than anything else.

what makes you think there are no german people in there? kaliningrad, i'm told, is one of the most "european" among russian cities, even more so than moscow and st.petersburg. a lot of different people in there.
plus, if you never been, how exactly can you tell what kind of emotional response would that stuff prompt in you?
anyway, see st.petersburg - it should be more like kaliningrad than most russian cities - and see for yourself. i'd still say though that if you go here to see something like that you might as well skip the whole thing and go see czechia.
