I'm pretty much resigned to what I believe to be my laptop's fate, but I figured I'd try asking you more knowledgeable folk; my laptop's GPU doesn't show up in the device manager, although my laptop still detects the GPU if I check on the hardware within the BIOS.  It also (presumably) recognizes it within the Windows system score report, though none of the actual specifications of the card show up (i.e., it gives the name "NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT" but it cannot detect the actual graphics memory of the card and so forth).

Is it fair to assume that my laptop is going to have to be relegated to purely word processing/interwebsing ?

Until it fails to get in to Windows at all, yeah.
